I agree with her sentiments that the system holds African Americans and other minority groups to a lower standard.

The standard however is not coming from the teachers, but rather by those in charge They believe that these people are in someway intellectually inferior. It is a travesty to these students and morally wrong. Mind you these liberal sentiments I speak of are coming from the thoughts of conservative republican "white man" with over 30 years teaching in the NYC DOE.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20674128.post-13939794664167644432019-02-15T14:49:24.349-05:002019-02-15T14:49:24.349-05:00To 8:01, but the point is that they are coming in ...To 8:01, but the point is that they are coming in in such numbers that they are making this THEIR country, and we are fading away in this new mass colonization process.

As the years progress you are going to see so much more conflict. Already we have the erasure of American history and culture on a mass scale (renaming streets, taking down statues, presenting a skewed anti-Americanism in history classes, labeling all whites as evil and racist like the jews were labelled badly before WW II, etc).

Increasing bilingualism is erasing English in larger swaths of the nation. The ties that bind people are increasingly based on race and background more than on a shared heritage, language, religion or culture.

By choice we are becoming the Austro-Hungarian Empire on steroids - a polyglot of unstable nations within nations. Just think ahead 50 years. Our grand kids will curse us, if any of them survive.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20674128.post-25799409787521434162019-02-14T08:01:42.894-05:002019-02-14T08:01:42.894-05:00"This is the reality that the article writer ..."This is the reality that the article writer does not want to face: they reject our values because they are not THEIR values. Is she kidding? This woman is placing the blame on their skin color????? She is delusional. I teach both white students and they are all expected to learn. Stop blaming the system! It is the outside world that they live in that is at fault. AND teachers are forced to push them through. Scary.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20674128.post-46919956151295484602019-02-13T09:15:07.023-05:002019-02-13T09:15:07.023-05:00She starts out accurately describing the condition...She starts out accurately describing the conditions, but then she retreats to the safe 'woke' social justice mumbo jumbo to explain why the students are so bad. No, the students do not feel that they are being labeled as failures. They have very, very high opinions of themselves. None of them are exposed to anyone who is telling them they are failures or have problems. On the contrary, they are constantly gassed up all the time: told how they are awesome, geniuses, the future, etc.

On the contrary, we are seeing a clash of cultural values on an epic scale. Western European culture developed to serve the cultural and peculiar ways of euro-derived peoples. When we had waves of immigration in the past from Europe, those people quickly assimilated in the U.S. because there was still a lot of commonality whether they were Italian, Irish, Hungarian, whatever.

On our current world, waves of African Americans, who have always identified as a separate people in the U.S. have washed over the cities of the north and elsewhere and integration never worked because Euro-derived culture and African American cultures were never the same. Now with the era of mass immigration from every exotic place underway, this clash if civilizational values is on full display.

Immigrants from cultures with similarities to euro-derived cultures (such as Asia) almost seamlessly join the 'system' while the 'sun peoples' of the world, where there is no long history of education, structure or expansive canon of researched knowledge (and this includes African Americans who largely reject 'white' values) are not integrating into the eurocentric educational world.

This is not to say one set of values is better than another. Every culture developed with what 'works' for it. When the young TFA woke white teachers go into the urban schools, they go in literally as religious missionaries trying to bring the light of a foreign civilization to the 'natives.' It never works, and they get frustrated - that is why they leave so fast.

This is the reality that the article writer does not want to face: they reject our values because they are not THEIR values. They have their own culture and interests and ways of being, and eurocentric style education is not one of them. In recent years, white professors (with a straight face) have tried to explain this by saying: homework is racist, being on time is racist, math is racists, standards are racist, etc.

We have a simple class of civilizations going on on the micro level in schools all across America. That is all. If you understand it, you do not have to be frustrated by it. Just take your 'cultural competency' PD and go with the flow.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20674128.post-49264386246912187532019-02-12T21:30:11.098-05:002019-02-12T21:30:11.098-05:00Who is dwarka currently banging? The best read was:

"What made matters worse, the teaching corps was a young, idealistic group, largely recruited from the non-profit Teach For America, not the leathery veterans who constituted a majority at the two previous schools.

I was a weird anomaly to these youngsters. What? I didn’t feel pity for these poor children? I didn’t take it for granted that they would abuse us? The new teachers were fervent believers in the prevailing ideology that the students’ bad behavior was to be expected, and that we should educate them without question according to the hip attitudes reflected in the total absence of good literature or grammar, and a sense of history that emphasized grievance".

Oh those young teachers from TFA so gung ho until reality bites them in d ass. I've...Kids in the Bronx have always been tough. I've been teaching them since the 90's. The difference now is that the teacher is blamed for everything. In years past, before Bloomberg, teachers and admins were all on the same page. We worked together for what is best for the students. Today, there is a massive rift between teachers and admins. We are now at odds with each other. Admins main goal seems to be to harass and micromanage everything a teacher does. The sad reality is that I honestly do not think that admins want to do this. I believe that it is Tweed and the DOE who are pushing admins to go after teachers. As mentioned, it was not like this prior to Bloomberg but the holdovers from his era still haunt us in the DOE. Also, back when this particular teacher was first working, there was no army of lawyers at "Legal" who are on every admin's speed dial. The United States is seeing a groundswell of revolt against the bullshit teaching conditions that teachers face every day. Here in NYC it is the same old same old nonsense due to the fact that we get paid well compared to them. I'd take a pay cut in a heartbeat if I could have smaller classes, a real discipline policy, and a sane evaluation system. However, all the UFT will tell is that we should be happy to have a job. We all know that is a crock of shit because most of the folks who actually work at the UFT Borough Offices only teach one class a day and they are still rated under S/U. I mentioned this at a chapter meeting a while ago and literally every teacher in the room could not believe this fact. The reason they did not know it is that the UFT, as usual, keeps so many things secret from the actual rank and file. I totally understand most of what she wrote. The part the really resonated was back in the day, teachers main objective was to make sure that the kids stayed quiet and safe. If that happens, then learning can take place. Now, teachers are expected to perform miracle teaching under the microscope of Danielson. I am surprised that this teacher was never targeted for 3020a for all of her reporting of what she saw and experienced during her years teaching. I am also surprised as to why she refers to school safety agents "guards" and not as school safety agents. Lastly, I wonder what she has been doing since she left teaching in regard to a career? They are tame for those of us in the Bronx. She did the right thing leaving. I waited too long and have severe problems because of it, but I had a family to support. The UFT does nothing and is much worse now than during Ms. Hudson’s years in the system.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
