I must disagree with her latest article which she seems to side with four White female DOE administrators who are planning to file a lawsuit that Chancellor Richard Carranza is a racist."

Lately YOU are one of my favorite writers; so we'll agree to disagree. I'm with Ms. Edelman and the four (white) teachers. Carranza is, most definitely, a racist!

One must look in the history of the DOE and see that many of the high level administrators were selected during the Bloomberg/Klein era. These administrators were mostly Black and White, with very few Hispanics and Asians.. "

Of what race are MOST teachers; and, therefore most administrators (most of whom) are STILL teachers who have sought and received (by whatever means) promotions? It stands to figure if more teachers are either Black or White, then most administrators will be too...Pomoting someone just because he/she is a minority is...biased and unfair.

When Carmen Farina became Chancellor she failed to "clean house". and kept 80% of the Bloomberg era administrators in place. This made sense since Carmen Farina was part of the "old gang" ..."

Very, very, very true.

"...as a Deputy Chancellor under Chancellor Joel Klein before being pushed out by Joel Klein in favor of Eric Nadelstern..."

This I did not know. Hmmm...I'll need to check this out. If true; Oh! the repercussions it's had!

"... she kept her close friend and incompetent Superintendent Amiee Horowitz, despite her repeated failures. She also kept Dorita Gibson as a Deputy Chancellor, despite her sickness and couldn't perform her duties. Carmen Farina was part of the problem and not the solution to cleaning up the DOE."

Not at all new or surprising. Cronyism has been around for ages and will be alive and kicking when you and I are long since in the ground..."

If I was the Chancellor and decided to clean house, many of the people that I would ask to retire, resign, or be demoted would be the Black and White high level administrators and replace them with a more diverse talent pool."

This is where you and I differ. I would ask to retire, resign and demote ALL of the inept, unqualified, punitive people who whose personal agendas - - instead of the good of NYC school children and schools - - drove them. I wouldn't give a "fat rat's" about their race, creed or hue. I would INSIST on the "best of the bunch". Not the most (or least) "melanized."

"That means that there would be less Black and White administrators and more Hispanic and Asian administrators."

Your statement seems to imply that more Latino (as a Latin woman, I must insist that you use the more enlightened terminology) and Asian administrators that White and/or Black. It may be true; but I doubt it as there are not as many Latino and/or Asian teachers and administrators as there are Black and White. Again, I would seek to draw from the most qualified regardless of race, creed or hue. If there are fewer qualified persons of any one of these...then I would not seek to make "fire out of clay."

"Chancellor Carranza is not anti-white as the article seems to insinuate...."

He is VERY Anti-White. He has said as much time and time and time and time again.

"...but simply a changing of the guard from the Bloomberg era administrators to what the present administration represents."

Oh he's a change alright. Heck, he's even "the guard" (unfortunately); but he is a deranged, rogue, vigilante "guard" with an imagined battle and cause.
Hiring or promoting someone JUST BECAUSE of his/her race is bias. It's also an insult to all; ESPECIALLY the hiree. It's saying that "no one else was good enough, so we will ACCEPT you because you "make good face."

Our children and colleagues deserve better.

Friend, we are in disagreement on this one. I'm still a big fan of your work though...Marilenanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20674128.post-73094353842165170532019-06-12T10:15:40.574-04:002019-06-12T10:15:40.574-04:00I overheard some people on the train stating that ...I overheard some people on the train stating that a memo was sent by Carranza to the NYC principals to not hire white teachers. Smoke screening the reality "by all" is just hurting the educational system more and we will never recover and truly give 'our' STUDENT a proper path to success. It's funny how all the " cry racist folks " are suddenly quiet bc they know the TRUE reality. It's awful most definitely stems from lack of family structure. We can only do so much as educators when "students" are lacking proper skills and respect to learn in school. I guess that makes you better than the rest of us right? I have read your Ed Notes.; it is clearly censored. At least Chaz has the balls to allow teachers to vent their viewpoints unlike EdNotes. Additionally, it seems that you have been out if the game for too long and have clearly lost touch with what is happening in the schools today; especially to “hire Jewish” male teachers. Perhaps you could ask one of your former black students for their input into fixing the NYC DOE. It is the first thing people notice. Many black kids for a century had only white teachers. Look at these comments. Do you think some of them had some elements of racism? A century ago Jewish kids didn't have many Jewish teachers as the system was mostly dominated by Irish teachers. Do you think there was no anti-semitism in that group of teachers? I as a Jew expect there will be antisemitism from many non-Jews even friends.

Jonathan is right about this - if people want to rant about race they should not be anonymous and this blog helps encourage them. For the record, I was in the classroom for almost 30 years and never had any white kids. I only had the top class twice. My experience with black and Latino kids was 90% positive. (I just saw on FB one of them now 50 got yet another degree). I still have relationships with some of them and even was invited to some weddings where my wife and I were among the few whites and were treated royally.

In the late 80s and early 90s I followed one of my black students who was a great basketball player and was involved with his high school team and got to hang out with many black teen age boys on the team over 4 years. At times they came to my house to play video games on my computer (which so few people had in those years). I had some kids sleep over at times. My wife found them so polite and respectful. And some later on didn't live past 18. But That experience gave me lots of insights and was an very positive experience. Were they angels? No. But I learned so much and found some of my previous attitudes about young black boys were distorted.
