New York City's Racial Achievement Gap Is Double When Compared To Other Big Cities In New York State. What Do You Say About That Mayor Bloomberg?

We all know that the Blommerg/Klein claims of narrowing the racial/income academic achievement gap was an illusion. However, what we didn't know was how poorly New York City fared when compared to the other big cities in New York State when it came to the racial achievement gap.

According to Maisie McAdoo of the UFT the 2010 racial academic achievement gap was 21.6% between Hispanics and Whites and 19.6% between Blacks and Whites. By contrast the four largest cities in New York State (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers) had a composite racial achievement gap of only 9% for Hispanics and 11.5% for Blacks, or half the achievement gap as New York City minorities. In other words all the phony reforms that the Bloomberg/Klein Administration implemented did not achieve the results they claimed. The fact that the racial academic achievement gap is twice as wide in New York City then in the other big cities in New York State shows that the Bloomberg/Klein reforms have miserably failed.

Another interesting fact from the New York State numbers was how poorly the Charter Schools prepared students for life after high school. Only 9.5% of Charter School graduates were considered "college and career ready", compared to the New York City public school graduates of 21.4% and New York state's 36.7%. I guess this puts the rest what kind of education you really get in these Charter Schools.

I have written about the phony claims on the Bloomberg/Klein propaganda on narrowing the income/racial achievement gap. Here, Here, and Here. Now it seems the 2010 New York State data puts to rest their bogus their claims of narrowing the academic achievement gap between minorities and Whites. The Bloomberg/Klein claims are simply "smoke and mirrors".

The Mayor4Life's stats show that our students are college-ready - college-remedial ready students!

What Bloomberg would say is "that's not true" or something equally ridiculous, and the NYC press would let him off the hook completely since they are nearly completely bought off by this dictator. This is what happens in a fascist state.

Chaz, I think you should run for mayor in 2013. You have a lot of good ideas.

Mayor for someone with some good ideas? He will have a better chance who has many secret and evil ideas.

Perhaps the Rupert Murdoch mess will cause those in the print media to reflect and start printing the facts rather than the news directed by powerful individuals like Bloomberg. Perhaps.

Already Christine Quinn, Mayor Bloomberg lite, is positioning herself to be the next Mayor and we must stop her by any means possible.

What concrete suggestions does anyone have to reduce the learning gap between white/minority students. I believe NYC only has approx 7% white students.

small classes, stringent student discipline polices, experienced teachers, letting teachers decide what is best for his or her classroom for a start. All the things that mayor Bloomberg and his education reformer buddies oppose.

It doesn't matter who the mayor is. There is only so much money to go around. Much of the money is mismanaged and wasted. Do you really think Bloomberg or Dinkins or Lindsey hated children. If you grow up in a poor community without parental supervision, it is almost impossible to give that child a public school education. Poverty=bad schools and social problems. The above is about 99% accurate.

The disparity or gap has been very good for Bloomberg and ed deformers, it provides perfect excuse to close down schools and to hammer a wedge between unions and the urban parents. How much can they do if there is not much a gap like most suburban school districts? You want to show them a gap, they want to do lots of damage on you.

There is a huge gap in suburban schools. Poor, largely minority districts have terrible schools, while more affluent schools do well. Everyone knows this, but nobody can solve the problem in real life. Why would you want to keep a failing school open?

You proved my point. It is the community and family that is responsible for the academic achievement gap. Closing down schools only to make new small/charter schools are not the answer, unless you put in a selective selection process. Otherwise, it is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

To Anon 7:05, the point is those aren't "bad schools" but schools with "bad" socioeconomics. "Closing them" isn't closing them at all. You're just causing a lot of additional damage to kids who are stuck in a bad situation, by shuffling them off to another "bad" school, with the corporatists making BIG BANK off all of it. But we know all of this, and of course, so does Heir Bloomberg. The problem is Heir Bloomberg owns "The Press" here, and we need to get the truth to the masses through means not reliant on mass, corporate media, which is all in on this scam. Did you notice who Rupert Murdoch sent to London to sort out Murdoch's mess there...? None other than our much beloved ex Chancellor...Heir Klein. So, you see the wicked web of corporatocracy that is waging war against us. We need at least another five Diane Ravitchs to plead our case...but one more would be a start...
