If You Don't Believe That Principals Are Trying To Get Around Hiring ATRs For Their Vacancies And Long-Term Leave Positions Then Just Read This!

A friend of mine found an advertisement on Craigslist from a high school in District 26/77 in Bellerose Queens and if you have any doubts what principals are doing about hiring ATRs to fill positions? This advertisement should put this to rest.

The position is a 9th grade Earth Science long-term leave replacement and notice it talks about the UFT collective bargaining agreement. It would appear that the Principal is trying to get around the hiring freeze by any means possible. You can read the advertisement Here.

Another ATR Agreement that the DOE violates at will and the union does nothing about it.

Principals don't want us ATRs. It is very apparent. At my new school today, can't remember the name or number of it, just typed in address in GPS, the secretary goes,'I have heard principals speak and the way they talk about ATRs is disgusting. They are probably in cahoots with Bloomberg about making you guys nuts.' I told her in the nicest way that was a very obvious statement. haha.

Does anyone else find that as the weeks go on that you don't even know who's who in these schools? I found out last Friday that the school aide was giving me my program each day and I thought it was an AP and that the principal was 'insulted' that I did not know she was the principal until I left on Friday.

This system is a joke!

This is not the only ad for DOE leave replacements or teachers on craigslist. There are many ads from New Visions schools looking for teachers and others. Just look at this one. http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/edu/2671591685.html.

Principals are very public about it because they know nothing will happen.

I was at a meeting where this scenerio was given. There were 4 vacancies in the schools. The principal was asked why are the teachers hired for these vacancies so inexperienced, as in have zero teaching experience (possibly no student teaching experience). The answer was as follows- we interviewed 50-60 FIRST year teachers and then we waited until the very end. We hired two days before school started teachers who were available from our list of first year teachers. So there you have it. We look only for FIRST year teachers and then we wait for the hiring freeze to lift and then we hire from the leftovers.

The truth is everyday you teach, it is one day closer to you becoming unemployable, one day closer to becoming an ATR or discontinued. An education degree in NYC, if you're lucky, is worth three years.

Sounds like this principal is a complete MORON...

and why is the union doing NOTHING?????

The principals who fill vacancies with subs and try to hire anyone but an ATR should be fined! If they continue to break the rules they should be fired...

If you search craigslist's jobs board for New Visions schools, you will see a plethora of openings for NYC public DOE schools. New Visions is one of the partnering organizations that has contributed to the decline of our school system. One job, a special ed job, has been advertised for a particular school, FDNY HS, FOR OVER A YEAR! Are there no ATR's for the jobs listed? Or do they just want brand new, untried, and compliant young teachers who will ignore the UFT contract because they either don't know their rights or don't want to rock the boat?

Why would you need experience? This career is for the young and inexperienced! As soon as you gain experience you become obsolete.
Anyone want to chime in on the professional develop. they recieved today? An AP asked me if I brought a good book? What else is she supposed to offer me? I'm only here through Thursday!!!

hilarious. craigslist? how about bid for a sub on ebay?

Professional development today: I wasn't told anything when I came because the payroll secretary was out of the building. Sat by myself in teacher's room for a while. Got Bored. Found people in the library so I sat there for a while and then sat with "my department" (the people who still teach my subject which I obviously don't) Both sessions were a complete waste of time. Most importantly, I could have walked in, moved my card, and walked right out at 8:15. No one knows me and no one was looking for me. sad.

hey anonymous at 6:08,

why didn't u leave? no one cares about us. i love the anonymity that comes with being an ATR. I taught 5 years in a school which was one floor, had 400 kids and where everyone knew when you blew your nose or used the bathroom or took a day off. it was a close knit backstabbing environment in which the principal tried to pit everyone against each other and now, I have zero stress. the DOE did me such a huge favor!

If they sell us down the river AGAIN in the next negotiation session we may get the boot! That is stressful to me!

There are teaching positions being advertised on gothamschools.org

Someone told me today that most principals won't hire ATRs cause we have a bad reputation...they don't even know me!

gothamschools.org also has teacher jobs available!

My understanding is that the UFT Leadership can change it by getting the Delegate Assembly to vote for it. However, the ATR situation will not change until a new contract is agreed upon and that will not happen until Bloomberg is gone.

Moreover, I take Mulgrew at his word that he4 will not sell out the ATRs. At least when it comes to allowing the DOE to terminate them.

if they tell the city they can lay us off, then you sue the union for not protecting our jobs which is the job of the union. all of this is scare tactics and sadly, most teachers fall for it. if they give away seniority, tell the city they can lay off the atrs, then you know what, we have no union anymore, we have zero bargaining power and the uft knows that.

Only a year to Bloomberg's reign is over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who will be our next mayor??? John Liu??Who will give the teachers the respect we deserve???

Hasn't anyone asked Chancellor Walcott or PEP for an appropriate remedy? That would be the first step in dealing with the ATR mess.

Don't keep complaining! Contact the people who are authorized to take action!

If Chancellor Walcott and PEP don't respond properly, or at all, then an appeal can be filed with the Commissioner of Education in Albany under Education Law § 310 within thirty days.

One of these education blogs said something about the skills that teachers must have. It listed all the stuff that we do that is not in the formal job description.
I cannot recall these things. Durnit that I didn't save the thing.
But one can imagine the things: able to diplomatically communicate with potentially hostile strangers about bureaucratic SNAFUs way beyond your control. e.g., the parent wants to know why there is a tremendous dearth of PCs in Johnny's classroom. You give a response that is courteous, but you lie or stretch the truth to cover for a supervisor that any week might stab you in the back.
Here is something that definitely applies to ATRs:
(from career services at monster.com):
"Update your resume as often as necessary to make sure your most relevant stories come to the fore."
Ah, the new skills that I am developing week by week --preventing kiddie murders in the classroom in a single bound --succeeding in lunchroom duty

As to: "Sounds like this principal is a complete MORON..."
NO, the principal is honest. She/he was acting on orders. Be glad that she/he was honest with you.
I prefer that to the lies about the DOE's being interested in the best qualified person.
Hmm, I'm beginning to see what some African-Americans have been getting at when they say that they prefer the straight-up honest racism of southern whites, to the smile/stab you in the back attitude of northern whites.

"If they continue to break the rules they should be fired..."
--Look at their role model/leader: Bloomberg. He defies court orders and steamrolls over protestors.
Same contempt for process and rules.
