It has come to my attention that Townsend Harris High School is looking for an inexpensive Social Studies Teacher. This is the #1 rated high school in Queens and the school has a reputation for hiring veteran teachers with a minimum of five years or more classroom experience since experienced teachers is what makes the students reach their academic potential. However, there is a new Principal and either the Principal and/or the Social Studies Assistant Principal has decided to go in a different direction and hire "cheap" by advertising the position on a private hiring website called "indeed". Listed below is the school's advertisement.

Why would the school do this, unless they have no intention of hiring within the system? While the vacancy is also listed on the Open Market Transfer System (OMTS), its obvious to me that they rather hire outside the OMTS, if possible. Moreover, the school is also trying to hire an inexpensive teacher with minimal or no teaching experience, based upon the salary and qualifications advertised in the listing. Finally, its also obvious that veteran teachers and ATRs need not apply since they are not wanted and the private listing points to that.
For those veteran teachers and ATRs who believe the DOE will place them in a school, teaching their content specialty. Well then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you because the truth is that nothing will change and Principals will do as they please and that means the cheaper the better, even if means advertising on private websites.

Open Market is a sham! Hiring practices are outrageous!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely nothing will change. That school is aggressively searching for a teacher within that salary range. Veteran staff will NOT get a permanent position because principals do NOT want staff with a high salary. Staff with less years need to fight to fight because they will reach senior year status IF they last. Too many are rolling over and doing things they should not be doing.
ReplyDeleteThis is outrageous!!.. How can this be allowed?
ReplyDeleteThe fact that they list the salary range between 50-80 thousand dollars is the obvious fact that veteran NYC DOE teachers need not apply. Top salary teachers in the DOE are now making over 100 grand. The whole open market is a sham.
ReplyDeleteIt is a sham. The open market needs to have a column with salary/years of service considered so that ATRS and senior staff need not waste their precious time applying. From what it seems, the principals have made a pact to NOT hire past a certain amount of years.

There are 5 vacancies in the school I'm in. None of them are listed on the open market site. I believe this is being replicated all over the city. The only positions listed on open market are the ones that they have already chosen the teacher. As they fill the vacancies, the principals will post them on open market. Who's going to stop them? Mulgrew? Farina? DeBlasio? What a sick joke.
ReplyDeleteThey only want young teachers.
DeleteIf Mulgrew doesn't pursue this, he really is a dirtbag.
ReplyDeleteThat is something a lot of people are saying already.
DeleteIt is all our Union's policies negotiated in bad faith against veteran teachers.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. It is about age discrimination. No surprise.
DeleteThis is so insulting. This is totally uncalled for and unprofessional. How can this happen? I thought what I went through today when I contacted HR connect was uncalled for and unprofessional but this is BS.
ReplyDeleteToday, I called HR connect. I was on hold for 48 minutes. The principal kept walking by and finally snapped. He screamed "if you do not hang up the phone now - I will rip you a new one!!!" I have never heard this expression before and this sounded more painful than being put on hold for 48 minutes.
Has anyone ever been ripped a new one? What does this entail? Who would rip me a new one? Would it be the principal, the AP or my own UFT?
Please help me. I honestly do not want to be ripped a new one.

Veteran teachers need not apply! Where are you UFT?
ReplyDeleteIf they want to save money they should get rid of field supervisors whose only purpose is to harass ATRs, and cause disruption.
ReplyDelete.....and get rid of principals and AP'S that harass which causes disruption and distracts from the main cause which is educating students. Seriously, administration must not have nothing to do if they can include that type of behavior in their "busy" workdays. A lot of these people are unhappy with their own lives so they want to spread their misery.
DeleteSystemic age discrimination with the collaboration of the UFT, and the harassment of field supervisors.
ReplyDeleteDear UFT,
ReplyDeleteAt the school I've been in since February, they excessed 5 teachers yesterday. Their budget was cut by $400,000 for next year. The principal told me many schools are in the same predicament. How are ATRs, most of whom are making 6figures, going to be forced placed? Especially since we are no longer free? There's your emailed question, as you requested. Feel free to answer it via this blog.
Your's Truly,
No Way 50K
How does this not violate civil service laws? Forget the UFT, as they have their place at the table. But don't schools have to hire through established systems? Then again, ignoring contracts, Chancellor's Regs, and even laws are established procedures for Principals for years now.
ReplyDeleteThe pity is that Townsend Harris did a great job getting rid of the DOE appointed intern Principal only to potential hurt the students by hiring cheap.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the DOE and these principals have created a situation where students will leave to charter schools with vouchers. Let's see what September brings with budget cuts, vouchers, charter/private schools. That will be interesting to track.
DeleteMany principals, mine included, openly state that they only want to hire untenured teachers. In the words of my current principal, he doesn't want to hire tenured teachers..."because they're too hard to get rid of." Actual quote.
ReplyDeleteAll these agreements done between the DOE and the UFT are illegal. ATRs never voted on these rules, or on Field Supervisors harassing us.
Deleteim at a school now that has a teacher with NO certification and the pricipuke is holding the position for him. No, nada, none, zero certification how the hell is that OK!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo contact Amy and CC the district rep.
DeleteHe is cheap. For the DOE is better a cheap person than a qualified expensive person. I thought the DOE does not discriminate.
Deletemy favorite is the uft website where it states "if no one contacts you from the open market please contact amy arundel". thats a joke, i reached out to her highness on 3 different occasions in the last 2 years and i received nothing, nada, no response... so very professional.
ReplyDeleteThey should make her an ATR, and have one of the bad supervisors harassed her.
ReplyDeleteNotice how both the DOE and Union is quiet when it came to the help wanted ad?
ReplyDelete12:14 do you have a special line to AMY? she has been nothing but useless for me!!!
