When It Comes To Veteran Teachers And ATRs The DOE Only Has Tricks And No Treats.
The DOE has, over the years, implemented policies and practices that discriminate against veteran teachers and ATRs, who for the most part are veteran teachers. These DOE policies and practices that discriminate against veteran teachers are thinly camouflaged with names like "fair funding", "mutual consent" and "open market". Below is a list of these DOE policies that discriminate against veteran teachers and are simply "tricks" to fool the public.
Trick:
The DOE's Fair Student Funding formula hurts schools that hire or want to hire veteran teachers by imposing a financial penalty on the school. With already tight budgets that funds the schools at 90% of its fair funding. The Fair Student Funding formula is unfair and discriminates against veteran teachers.
Trick:
The DOE encourages principals to hire "the cheapest and not the best " teachers for their school while claiming that they only want the best teachers for the students. The DOE just keeps tricking the parents and the students with their lies.
Trick:
The DOE's Open Market System is only useful by relatively new and untenured teachers. Veteran teachers need not apply since the DOE policies and procedures make it difficult for schools to hire them..
Trick:
The DOE's "Mutual Consent" is not mutual since ATRs are being "forced placed" at these schools without their consent.
Trick:
The DOE encourages newspapers to write articles claiming ATRs are "bad teachers" rather than admit the truth that its about salary, seniority, institutional memory, and DOE policies that make the ATRs unwanted.
Trick:
The DOE's tight school budget incentivizes principals to reduce teacher numbers and have class sizes at contractual limits which means that veteran teachers become attractive targets for removal.
The DOE needs to stop with the tricks and treat school staff with the respect and resources they truly deserve.

ReplyDeleteAs an ATR I was not allowed to attend Professional Develoment
every Monday at schools I attended. I was told to stay in another room.
I still try to attend. So obviously when you get observed the administration
tells you why you didn't do this, which was in our last professional
development. You say you did not invite me to the professional development. They say that's not the answer and you get a bad rating.
Gotcha policy.
DeleteA question. A colleague of mine who is an ATR going through a 3020a told me that, someone in the YFT indicated to her that if a principal is successful in a teacher being found guilty of 3020a, that the school will get the teacher's salary added to their budget. Have you heard anything about this? And if so is it true or just rumor? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteLike a bonus? That terrible. If anyone knows anything, please inform.
DeleteJust an unfounded rumor. The Principal would deduct the veteran salary and probably hire a :newbie" which will save the school some money.
ReplyDeleteAlso harassment from Field Supervisors.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you constantly repeat the same information, Chaz?
ReplyDeleteHe wants to be clear on the message. You should ask Why nobody is taking care of the problems?
DeleteChaz is doing the right thing in bringing up issues. It takes a lot of work and dedication to write a blog and we need to all thank Chaz. Thank you Chaz for providing this forum.
DeleteNot to mention the harassment and the nonsense of useless field supervisors.
ReplyDeleteThanks. It sounded crazy to me, but working 11 years for the DOE nothing is ever too crazy. My school allows me to attend PD though it's annoying that none of this counts.
ReplyDeletePrehiatoric:
ReplyDeleteMaybe if the DOE and UFT leadership responded to the many complaints, I would not need to repeat some of the issues.
Report that to your boss at 52 Broadway.
Maybe if they both stop looking the other way.
DeletePrehistoric pedagogue,
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don’t agree with all of chaz’s takes , there is a reason he emphasizes things more than once.
That is because Chaz cares about the profession. The Uft doesn’t. Chaz cares about ATRs and how we are violated. The Uft does not.
I honestly feel if Chaz were in charge of the Uft, this job would be a lot better.
Mulgrew isn’t even a broken clock bc a broken clock is right at least two times a day.
This past year, all of chaz’s Posts with his sources have been accurate and right on the nose.
People like sill and Arundell and mulgrew fear people like Chaz who actually care about people in the union
I would like to see Arundell and Mulgrew being harassed and observed by Stark.
ReplyDeleteI see your point
ReplyDeleteIt is incredible the resources they spend on Field Supervisors chasing out ATRS with a severe shortage of teachers around the corner.
ReplyDeletePrehistoric,
ReplyDeleteDo you get a cut of mulgrew kickbacks I am sure he receives from city hall?
Just wish I could prove it
7:29 AM: nope, don't get a cent from Mikey.
ReplyDeleteTier 1 pension and seven figure TDA balance plenty for me
Mulgrew apparently is telling his subordinates to side with management because they are violations bring made right and left.
ReplyDeleteSend a clear message to the UFT:
ReplyDelete1. I did not vote to be harassed by Field Supervisors.
2. I did not vote to become an eternal ATR.
3. I did not vote to be disrespected.
4. I did not vote for my position to be taken away from me for no good reason while they hire inexperienced and less qualified teachers.
5. I did not vote for my rights as an ATR to be diminished compare to regular teachers.
I will never vote for you either.

DeleteBy refusing to enforce the contract. By refusing to file grievances that are legally legitimate. By creating the ATR pool. By agreeing to field supervisors that are only there to go after veteran teachers. By not allowing a chapter for ATR's. By making us third class citizens. Which per diem subs are being observed by field assassins? By eliminating seniority. By agreeing to fair student funding. By destroying thousands of teachers careers. By agreeing to rotation in a vocation that is built on relationships. By refusing to respond when we are vilified in the press. By telling us that we are lucky to have a job and benefits. By refusing representation in any situation that they should be helping. By theft and denial of services. I can also mention racketeering. They colluded with the DOE to not only create the ATR pool but to assist in the psychological warfare that they the Human Resources enforcement arm of the DOE.
DeleteThe UFT had sold us out at every turn. The truth is that because of NYS civil service laws they can't have us fired . So all you can possibly say about the UFT is that they pupport to represent our interests and take our money for it. They just hurt us terribly. There is a special place in hell for these sociopathic parasites. I eagerly wait for JANUS. I'm going to keep my money. They need to be starved.
Retaliation and abuse is common in the DOE.
