Chancellor Richard Carranza visited Staten Island and told the local media his six key components that makes an effective school. They are as follows:
- Strong leadership
- Excellent teachers.
- Strong and varied curriculum.
- School and classroom organization.
- Social and emotional learning.
- Parent outreach and empowerment.
When it comes to excellent teachers, since the Guliani era the word"excellent" means inexpensive and untenured teachers. Memo to the Chancellor, there are many excellent teachers in the ATR pool aand many veteran teachers will transfer if it wasn't for DOE hiring policy that penalizes principals who hire veteran teachers, The Fair Student Funding formula needs to be eliminated before the word "excellent" means what it should mean.
Eliminate or severely reduce "credit recovery" courses. Stop imposing scholarship requirements, and make the courses "college and career" ready. Only 3 out of every 10 students are ready for the adult world.
If social and emotional learning means restorative justice instead of a suspension or does it mean giving out "warning cards" instead of being arrested, then I am skeptical.
To the Chancellor, its one thing to say what is needed, its another thing to get the bloated Bureaucracy at the DOE to implement those changes. You can read what the new Chancellor proposed Here.
Note to chancellor Carranza - The teachers in the ATR pool as well as the guidance counselors and social workers are some of the best educators this city. has to offer. Some years ago our former Mayor Mr. Mike Bloomberg created what is called the ATR pool. Bloomberg did this because he was a hater and boy oh boy did he hate teachers.
ReplyDeleteMost of the teachers in the pool are experienced educators with 10 plus years experience. Bloomberg singled out these people because they made more money than the average newbie coming into the system which caused Bloomberg - a billionaire mind you - to create this pool of educators and try to force them out of the classrooms stating that they made too much money.....
Bloomberg did this by creating the "fair student funding" fake funding system which punishes principals who want an experienced educator. The only reason principals are not hiring educators from the ATR pool is simply because they cannot afford to pay the salary. Bloomberg went a step lower and put out a campaign stating that all educators in the pool are inferior but that was fake news my friend actually quite the opposite.
If you want to improve the schools in this city you should take a look at the ATR pool and ensure that those educators are working in our schools next Fall to help some of the most neediest students the world has ever known. Peace.
RIGHT ON 10:37am!!! You said that perfectly!!!
ReplyDeleteBloomberg had it right. MOST ATR's are terrible at teaching! mainly because of the dumbing down of the ability to obtain a teaching license are there so many inferior classroom misfits. Most ATR's are sweating and hoping for another buyout. Jokes on you I got it from a good source that there will not be one, at least this year.
ReplyDelete4:52,
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess I’ll get another year of 100k to babysit. Don’t forget my medical and my max TDA. Lot cheaper to give us a buyout. I’m going on 33rd year!!! So fuck you 452. Don’t listen to the UFT, all they does is lie - hopefully I’ll be getting an extra $1400 a year as well, when I opt out of paying for Shill’s bar tab.
@4:52 You bitter little bitch: First of all as I walk into a school it is teachers like you who wish you were in my shoes or flip flops. Even in the winter I wear shorts and flip flops to get in quick workouts while you struggle to maintain control of your classroom. I see you looking at me in the teachers room while you cry and wipe tears. I sit relaxed reading my book and playing on my phone. It is people like you who walk out of your classroom to ask me to help you with students while I walk laps around the school for exercise. Last week I was able to swim 2 miles in the swimming pool at my assigned school. I enjoy my daily coverages. Principals adore me. One squeezed my nice butt just 3 weeks ago. Bloomberg rewarded me by keeping me as an ATR and that's why I contributed $$$ to his campaign. As a matter of fact I was one of 20 ATRs who protested and begged Bloomberg to run for a 4th term just in case the next mayor decided to assign me to teach again.
ReplyDeleteYou are just jealous you are not in our shoes or flip flops in my case. Go cry and troll someone else.
Stories like this I love to hear. Screw the holier than thou ‘real teacher’. I’ll work the 6 periods(one is paid) and do as little as possible and guess what? No one cares. Oh and I’ll collect my 6 figure salary
DeleteI have met a handful of ATRs who were not fit to be in the classroom, but they are a tiny minority. Every profession from auto mechanics to lawyers to doctors have a similar number of misfits.
ReplyDeleteThe overwhelming majority of ATRs I've talked with and seen in action are competent and ready to help students. The arrogant younger teachers ignore them, believing that anyone who is an ATR must suck. They don't even care that they could be an ATR one day too because at the end of the day, most of the 20-something teachers I know always talk about 'doing something else' in the future, just like the ed 'reformers' wanted.
Trouble is, with all the mass immigration, the 'something else' will likely not be open for them. Then they start crying about 'teacher rights' and tenure and seniority and all that. Trouble is, by then there will be fewer protections and principals will be looking to get rid of them because they 'make too much.'

ReplyDeleteIs it possible you work for Eva Moskowitz?? You probably have moles on your face like she does - matching nit wits. We will be getting a raise next month which brings my salary to $115 a year and your salary gets bumped to $51,500 with no tenure in sight.....Told ya Bloomberg was a prik. excuse me while i laugh this one off.
He should remove all Leadership Principals that are destroying our schools.
ReplyDelete@5:28 "ALL THEY DOES" I love it when incompetent idiots make my point for me!
ReplyDelete6:58,
ReplyDeleteI wrote that while I was on the bowl thinking of you, texting and wiping my ass. Attack the grammar if can’t the substance of the post. You are a petty bitch.

@1:17 I read what your saying but all I'm hearing is Waaaa, Waaaaaaaaaa, Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Typical NYShitty babysitter!
ReplyDelete6:30, You’re the one complaining about us. I’m smiling all the time. Maybe one day when you grow up you can be an ATR too. Until then keep killing yourself working and being abused by the kids, administration and UFT. Treat yourself to a Happy Meal today - you deserve it.
ReplyDelete@1:17 and @7:15 You aspire to being an ATR. That shows your commitment to teaching. Do the "REAL" teachers a favor and resign. Your nothing but a joke and a crayon eater! Curious what online college did you get your degree from?
ReplyDeleteHe should get rid of all the Leadership Principals that have destroyed our schools.
