Principal Manuel Urena Accused Of Anti-Semitism And Discrimination.

Three federal lawsuits have been filed by teachers who were targeted by Principal Manuel Urena of the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan.   He has been accused of targeting Jewish, Caucasian. and veteran teachers on trumped up disciplinary and performance charges and replaced them with young Hispanic teachers.

According to the teachers, including a former Chapter Leader, their complaints to both the DOE and UFT fell on deaf ears. You can read the New York Post article Here.  Principal Urena has a below average teacher trust factor that is 15% lower than the Citywide average.

Principal Urena has been identified as an administrator in need of improvement by the Solidarity caucus in their blog called "Don't Tread On Educators" blog.  You can find what the commenters say about Principal Urena  Here. Moreover, Ed Notes online blog had an article about Mr. Urena's assault on the chapter as well.

This appears to be another case of our union leadership not acting upon member complaints when targeted by a vindictive Principal.

Can we think of 1 example the uft disagree with the doe from Joel Klein era till today? So why are we still support the current union leadership? Principal abuses his or her power toward teachers due to our weak/ineffective uft.

The Union is part of the corruption.

I have heard various examples of Dominican admins driving everyone out - even other Latinos.

"...replaced them with young Hispanic teachers."

Uh, this happens all over the city.

"Diverse' admins are hired to 'represent' group X, Y, or Z, which immigrated in huge masses over a short period of time and took over an area from American citizens.

Then said admins (or politicians, or supervisors - everyone really) bring in their own people and push the Americans out.

It happened to my school in Queens. When I hired in their ten years ago the staff was over 80% white American, mostly young liberal teachers and the rest evenly divided among various racial and immigrant groups.

Then we got a militant, white-hating "Nuyorican" principal. In one year she fired her Italian-American AP and drove all the white and few black teachers out with the most horrendous campaign of harassment I ever saw.

The Union did not help us, but rather advised people to transfer, which almost everyone did. I am the last white teacher from that original cohort and I barely outlasted her. The year she was forced to retire because of complaints she had targeted me in a big way.

Now we have been living with new admins for a couple of years, all three latino. Out of a staff of about 50, there are about 10 of us white teachers. They prefer latinos in hiring and they are about 60% of the staff now. It's just the way it is.

Now the Democratic Party is finding out that a surge of 'people of color' is knocking out white Dem leaders in more and more places.

Diversity is a lie. Every group is largely for itself and helps their own, except for brainwashed, self-hating whites who have been seriously duped, though they don't know it and won't feel the worst effects for at least another decade.

Our Union never does anything. They just sit on the sidelines. Look what Dwarka accomolished and the Union did nada.

Mulgrew has publicly said the UFT won’t go after principals because they are fellow union members - unfortunately for us the CSA and it’s members (principals and admins) don’t reciprocate.

He does not go after principals because he made a deal that principals can run wild.

Mulgrew and his liberal underqualified UFT are the worst. Thirty years ago a cadre of sharp dressed union leaders would walk into the school, flash their ID's and walk directly into the principals office unannounced. The difference is the UFT has no balls and NYC DOE and it's principals know it....

Look at Minerva Zanca at Pan American. She would tell ATRs that were sent there on interviews that she would sign their sheet to show they went to the interview without interviewing candidates because she told the candidates they wouldn't get hired anyway because the candidate didn't speak Spanish or in other words weren't Latino. This is a great example we're teaching our kids.

In this era of admins, I have had two Latino principals. They are corrupt. I am not blaming their ethnicity .
The principal training program- leadership academy is evidently heavily attended by Latinos. This is the current trend .I don't feel any antisemitism but I am a minority now in my school .Back in the days the principals were often Jewish. Besides Klein's short stint, most chancellors are Latin too . Many of our Jewish teachers have retired and all have been replaced by young and often replaced by attractive women .We have hired a Jewish teacher or para or admin in over 20 years .

currently his cover up of missing students is coming back to haunt the program. As discovered by FOIL, serious incidents have not been reported in OORS for well over a year. What happened to Avontes law? We house autistic and psychiatric students. Why do the admins roll the dice with their careers? I think they feel invincible

Some of you complain about how you have been treated, and it may be unfair, but you sound so racist.

My principal isn’t nice to anyone, he just hates humans in general. We have a huge turnover because of it. We are trying to outlast him.

Interestingly, since he hates everyone, his hires have been of every race, religion, color, age…etc.--I think this is the first nice thing I’ve ever said about him. He even hired his friend (who knew he had one) and his friend now hates him, but pretends to still care for him. He rarely hires new people (seems that most are between 4-12 years experience-still not fair for the people with the 15+ years in). There are some that look in their 40’s and should have more than 15 years, but I don’t know their years in.

  12. First 2:23 has a good point. This isn't necessarily new. Italian principals hired Italians, Jews hired Jews, Irish hired Irish, etc. We must admit there was a time when a talented black or Hispanic young teacher would have trouble getting into a school because they didn't have an "in".

The current regime preaches "equity" and anti-racism but it is really just new racism, this time administered by blacks and Hispanics. I think to them, it's simply "what goes around comes around."

In this case with Urena, the fish rots from the head. The Superintendent Rosales is racist and this filters down to her admins. Young white teachers in this district rarely earn tenure and the older more experienced ones are harassed at best and become ATR's or "Ineffective" at worst. All the while the mantra of "white privilege" is repeated ad nauseam at every weekly PD. That she was promoted to one of Carranza's new positions speaks volumes about him and ought to be a warning to all of us who are of the "wrong" hue to watch our backs.

U said it best. The new racism is alive and well .The middle ages white Jewish male is the smallest minority now. "Oh no, you eat bacon. I thought you couldn't because your Jewish"

JUst look at society in general. The US open tennis match was a sham with Serena Williams berating an umpire screaming and calling the umpire a thief among many other slum words. Serena has had this problem in the US Open several times and interesting enough its only when she is getting her ass kicked.

So, she loses the match and makes a complete ass of herself and the sport yet she is supported by the fake news media! Ahhh, poor serena bla bla bla...people are afraid to come out and say she is a classless sore loser but the politically correct society hushes and lets this woman of color get away with berating the sport, the umpire, herself and the USA but political correctness has all the celebrities "supporting" serena. The US is headed for the abyss and we all know who will be driving the space ship. Funny thing though, political correctness does not seem to be with us here in the trenches of the NYCDOE schools.

  15. When I was there as an ATR there was an opportunity where I might do a US history maternity leave. I had one interaction from the principal which lead me to believe he was arrogant. I didn't take the assignment. A black ATR who I worked with, told me he brought her up on 3020a charges after an incident at the school. What I mean to say is that it seems like he targets a wide net,not just white people.

I am just glad I am almost done with the NYCDOE. I am not currently being targeted or attacked, am in a decent school that has its problems but I am not being treated badly.

I would never blame one group or stereotype one group, but in this divisive moment in our city's, state's and nations's history, it is worthwhile to be aware of the various biases and what can happen. I am, sadly, a white male in my late 40s, and that puts me in a negative demographic.

    Good luck to all!

I am an admin in my mid 50's and I have been victim of discrimination on three accounts. 1. I am white, 2. I am male, and 3. I am 54. I am no racist or sexist in any way but I have been passed up for promotions from my all black female superintendents who also have all black female assistants, some who can't even complete a full sentence in a memo. Even some black men can't catch a break. I am no more than 2 yrs away from retirement but wanted to stay and make a difference. However, I am getting out as soon as I can. The racism here against whites is just awful. Now I see it against blacks since hispanics are taking over.
