A New Chancellor But The Same Toxic Culture Exists At The DOE
Chancellor Richard Carranza is a distinct improvement over Carmen Farina. He seems not to target teachers and cares about the public schools. He also wants what's best for the students. However, just like Carmen Farina, Chancellor Carranza has failed to "clean house" at the DOE. Sure, he made a few changes like removing the terrible Director of the adult education program and the head of the pupil transportation office. Unfortunately, the DOE policymakers, appointed during the Bloomberg Administration are essentially in place and their "gotcha" mentally is as strong as ever.
Moreover, Chancellor Carranza has failed to eliminate school based fair student funding, fully fund the public schools, reduce class size, eliminate the DOE bloat, and resolve the ATR crisis. While our union leadership is having a love affair with the Chancellor, for teachers, the same old Bloomberg rules continue to apply at the schools, with incompetent administrators and a hostile work environment in the classroom.
While Chancellor Carranza is a friend to our union leadership, his DOE is still the enemy when it comes to the teachers.
I'm willing to wait to the summer and see if Chancellor Carranza can change the toxic culture at the DOE but I am not holding my breath.
I'm willing to wait till the start of the next school year before I pass judgement on him. I want to see how many teachers get discontinued, have probation extended, and/or who gets fired via 3020a. I also want to see how the new contract actually pans out in regard to how the new observation system will work. He seems like a good guy but I think the holdovers from Boomberg at the DOE are keeping him out of the loop in regard to the shitty things are we as teachers face.

@5:04 that's funny "im willing to wait" you make it sound like "you will actually do something" lol, you will do nothing now and will do nothing at the start of the next school year. you and every other teacher will sit there and take whatever they tell you to take and pay hefty union dues to do it! ReplyDeleteThe DOE sadists continue the lie that ATRs will be rotated, and yet no rotations. And the UFT repeats the lie. Just come out and say that ATRs are in the school for the year! Stop giving false hope to ATRs trapped in shithole schools, it borders on psychological abuse.

ReplyDeleteATRs aren’t rotating according to sill. Only rotations are if there is an ‘issue’.
DeleteI found "willing to wait" hilarious too. Ironic that he wants bad admin removed. How about bad teachers? My ICT SPED CO-teacher does nothing. Not even planning. Why don't Chaz post about the need to remove bad teachers.
ReplyDeleteHey asshole anon, 4:49. I'm the "Willing to wait" person. My point is that I am willing to wait before I cast judgement on the chancellor. The topic was not about what we are going to do. I've been teaching for over 20 years. I have options. I can quit, I can transfer out of NYC. There is actually lots I can do. And yes, I can even pull dues. Just for your info, I have written numerous harsh letters to the UFT complaining of our conditions. I have spoked to many UFT reps and gave them an earful on what we as teachers want. I also have got many of my colleagues to vote for anti-UNITY folks who run in elections. So, in simple terms, you are a douche who does not know what the hell you are talking about in regard to me as a person.

ReplyDeleteThe NYC DOE and the UFT are swamps; full of obviously corrupt people with individual agendas. This is not going to change anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the NYC DOE website "For the 2018-2019 school year, our total budget is $32.3 billion. The DOE also has a separate capital budget of approximately $16 billion to build new schools, renovate existing schools, and purchase equipment over five years."
This is a very expensive "Ineffective."
How much is the MTA looking for? Forget that, they are just as corrupt as the DOE.
