Chicago Teachers Strike

The Chicago teachers went out on strike today after the City refused to put in writing lower class sizes and assurances of hiring adequate support staff for the schools.

The teachers have asked for a 15% raise for three years and the City proposed a 16% raise for five years, or 3.2% per year.  Moreover, the union is demanding that every school have a full time nurse, a social worker, and a librarian.  Finally, the 25,000 teachers and 8,000 support staff are asking for affordable housing.

The Chicago school system is nearly broke and it will be interesting to see what the City finally agrees to once the teachers contract is settled.

That's because of the Taylor Law. This is an NY law, not a federal law.

NYC teachers have gone on strike in the past despite the Taylor Law but that was a looooong time ago. It will never happen again.

There is no real solidarity among teachers now in NYC.

We're all like transient hobos passing through to somewhere else.

There is so much teacher moving around, turnover, burnout and endless pressure attacks from admins that we are all like rabbits looking for our safe hidey-holes.

I thought about this the other day. I also won't stick my neck out no matter how worthy the cause in my school, and try my best to be invisible, under the radar.

Nearly every teacher I know feels the same. The admin environment in our Leftist "social Justice" school system is really Stalinist in its corruption and arrogance.

Sadly, the kids lose, but our civilization is passing away, if you all hadn't noticed.

The teachers in my school are so divided; they only look out for themselves. They have questionable and profitable friendships with the administrators. Several teachers gossip with the administrators and even make things up just to get in good with the admins or quid pro quo for being hired.

Needless to say, since there are so many incompetent and immoral administrators, they hire incompetent and immoral staff. My school used to have a hiring committee. We no longer do; the principal does the hiring. This way, he can hire his friends and family relations.

I have never seen anything like this.

I agree with all the posts. Collect your pay benefits and enjoy your time off. I just retired and lived through some hell. Stay in your lane and retire. Its pure bliss and time to care for you and your family. Admins are very much the opponent. Not the kids. Good luck
