The explosion of students who "opted out" will not have a final number until all the school districts comply with the FOIL and publish the data. However, enough school districts have reported (72%) to get a clear picture how successful the student "opt out" movement has been. So far, 185,000 students have "opted out", that's 17% of all students eligible to take the 3-8 grade tests. On Long Island, approximately 43% of the students "opted out". Interestingly, the highest "opt out" rates were in solidly middle class school districts not the wealthy suburban school districts that the media would like one to believe. This shows how the vast majority of middle class parents are concerned with the validly of the Common Core best high-stakes test on their child's well-being To find your school's "opt out" numbers you can use this website. You want names? Here’s mine: ROSEANNE MCCOSH. Teachers aren’t using their classrooms as political soapboxes. We are speaking the truth. We are utilizing social media, our living rooms, dinner tables and banquet halls during weddings, bat mitzvahs & christenings. We are utilizing the stands as we watch our children play ball. We are utilizing supermarket aisles, waiting rooms and lobbies of banks. We are utilizing every venue in our personal lives to tell the truth about NYSED’s failures and the school administrators who enable those failures by making threats against students, parents and teachers. I am a teacher. I am a taxpayer. I am an opt-out proponent. I am an American who understands her country’s Constitution. Call my boss if you like (Chancellor Farina of NYC). I don’t hide from bullies. I call their bluff, and if necessary fight them head on. You should be ashamed of yourself and your McCarthyesque tactics. to anonymous 9:58 - Passing Regents exams is required for graduation. Opting out means no diploma and students would be very unwise to skip a Regents exam.
The other exams, given from grades 3 to 8, seemingly don't count for anything except teacher punishment.
Grade 3-8 high stakes tests were created to label both teachers and schools ineffective thus creating the conditions to dismiss the teacher and close the school. In the process kids are also labeled and tortured: told they don't measure up.
