DOE Requires School Attendance On The Veterans Day Holiday Next School Year.

Believe it or not, while most of the nation's schools, banks, government institutions, and other businesses will be closed to honor our veterans for their service to protect our country.  The DOE has decided to keep New York City schools open on the Veterans Day holiday as an insult to our servicemen and women who served around the world to protect our democratic traditions.

The DOE's rationale is that Veterans Day, November 11, 2017,  falls on a Saturday and that allows them the right to keep schools open on Friday, despite most everybody else in the country closing up shop on Friday to honor our veterans.  To me, this is an insult to our millions of veterans and their families and is decidedly not what America is about.  We should honor our veterans, many of them heroes, who put their own personal needs and jobs on hold to wear a uniform to protect our way of life and defend our country from evildoers.

Shame on the DOE leadership to ignore our American traditions and require New York City schools to open on a day that many other schools and businesses close to celebrate and honor our veterans.

I'll take it off anyway and so should every other teacher. It's an incredible insult to our country.

But where's the push back? Where's our union?

If this isn't changed (and realistically, it CAN be changed), I think I will take the day in principle.

C'mon Chaz, you know NYC's largest babysitting service must stay open!

What an insult to veterans!!!!

I remember when Veteran's Day was a workday with the BOE. A veteran who I used to work with made a point of taking the day off.

I WILL NOT BE WORKING THAT DAY. My is already spent. I already know plenty of teachers who have kids in LI schools who will be staying home. At some point, one of two things will happen, they will say oops, we didn't realize it was Veterans Day holiday (after they take the PR hit), or they will have to pay so much money in coverages and subs. Which would be kind of amusing, too.

Yom Kippur is the same situation next school year. We lose both holidays in fall 2017.

I just can't wait for these ATR's to finally be forced placed. Sick of seeing them in the lounge waiting for coverages to come their way. Most days there are no coverages. It is sickening to witness. Get them placed immediately please. Most do not want to be placed and publicly state that they can do this until they retire and do not want to go back into the classroom. What a disgrace! Then these same idiots complain about our union after they are gift wrapped this position of ATR with no expectations. I would pay money to see these ATR's in a classroom 5x a day with 34 ninth graders in each. I would pay money to see this!!!!!

Anon 4:48,
Realize you have a limited prospective. In my school the ATR gets 5 periods a day every day for the 4 months he's been here. We are a renewal school so teachers go out two full days a month for PD. Also most of us have taken our 10 days already. The kids like him and he's a good teacher. Don't judge people until you walk in their shoes. He didn't ask the union to be a an ATR and he asked the principal to hire him. She said no. I'm not thankful for Danielson or the 4 observations the union should have fought. Are you?

To 4:48. I am not an ATR, but I have a friend who was placed in ATR status by a vindictive principal who hated that she was our chapter leader. (He excessed her to do it.)

I think the ATRs who can retire anytime are mostly stepping back (and maybe they should retire because life is short), but the real tragedy is the ATRs who are far from retirement. They are being targeted heavily and are filled with anxiety.

ATRs are getting abused in a variety of ways. If you were shafted like they are being, you might be more sympathetic when they sit in the break room waiting for a job to do. We are all a decision away from being ATRs ourselves.

The DOE is filled with 'social justice' pinheads who hate America and want to 'collapse' the 'system.' Wait til they start changing school names to eliminate 'oppression.' (You know, evil white men...)

4:48 a Unity stooge. I want the DOE to place me and I cover six periods a day, for which they pay me.

The UFT and the DOE created the problem. You should blane them instead.

Been there, done that. Instead of sounding frustrated you should go with that same frustration to your administration that causes this to happen. Your administration should provide the teacher, guidance counselor, social worker, etc. in an ATR status with tasks as per their title. Administration on purpose does NOT give work. Save your money and speak to your administration. Don't get upset with someone in an ATR status. Get upset with the DOE and administration. It's easier to get upset with someone in an ATR status because you are a coward. By the way, ATR is a status. We are certified teachers, social workers, guidance counselors and school psychologists.

Hey 4:48

You are an envious bloke, aren't you?

To all Renassisance High School teachers, at the Lehman campus in the Bronx, tell the ATR that is placed there that one of their teachers is 4:48. Then again who gives a shit what 4:48 thinks.

Everyone is at risk of being placed in the ATR status, including 4:48PM that has a lot of hot air and a big ego. If you see a person in the ATR status in your lounge, say hello and be nice. It's true, go to your administration and catch an attitude with them. 4:48 is arrogant.

The last day of the 2017-2018 year is June 26. This year it is June 28.

I'm an ATR. I get all five of my teaching periods every single day. Some days are easier than others. Maybe I get to be an extra set of hands in a classroom, or stay with Pre-K while they nap and do centers. And I'm thankful for that, because this school is not the greatest as far as student behavior is conerned (though it is MUCH better than some I've been assigned to). So I see those easy days as compensation for the other days where my life is a miserable, living hell for 6.5 hours and I have do simply do what I can to survive.

As far as ATR teachers sitting in the lounge, it is not my job to assign myself to classes. That is the job of administration. If they fail to assign me a schedule for the day, what, exactly, would you have me do? Enough of the days in the lives of ATRs are hellish at best. If for one day someone wants to make my job easier, well then, thank you.

If the legal holiday falls on a Saturday, no one gets the Friday. If it falls on Sunday, then you get the Monday. I'm sure Banks and the Post Offices will be open on the 10th. This is not new. It's always that way.

The WB said...

So instead having the day off Friday, we'll... have the day off Saturday. Like on all Saturdays. What's the difference?

The WB said...

Perhaps the title of this piece should be "DOE Requires School Attendance On School Day." There's a lot of tin-foil-hat nonsense going on here. Failing to make the day before a holiday a holiday, while already having the actual holiday off of from school anyway, is not a left-wing conspiracy to soften our kids for communism. Everybody chill.

False news.... If you have a real job you get Friday off

Unknown said...

Absolutely.. The banks, courts, post offices are all closed!!!!

I am a veteran and since the DOE won't give me the day I will take it. I served my country for 29 years missing my sons major momentsvin his life. Thus us a disgrace. But we can observe and celebrate religious hokidaysvwhike adding 3 others. I'm not taking anything away from religious observance, however I am ashamed that veterans aren't celebrated.

You cant compare Yom Kippur and Veterans Day. Yom Kippur is directly from God Himself and is the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. Its an insult to Jews to compare it to Veterans Day

Anonymous said...

Not true. I have a real job. I work on veterans day, and we don't get a lieu day if it falls on a weekend. This seriously isn't that big of a deal. And also, not everyone who has a "real job" has the luxury of taking off. Like, relax. Celebrate vets on Saturday.

And also, if I can't get the day off, what do I do with my child that day? Hire a sitter? Or should I have planned for veterans day before having a child.

Anonymous said...

Because people have to complain that America is under attack and that liberals and the doe hate vets. There are people who need to create an issue where there isn't one because they aren't able to find a real cause to promote....like hungry children in America and the kids whoiss out of hot meals when school is closed...etc

I work for a bank and we’re open today and off tomorrow since we’re open for business on Saturday. Post office is open today too and closed tomorrow. The mailman just left here. School aren’t open Saturdays so they should be closed today to observe. The island schools are closed and city is not. My husband is a nyc teacher and he took today off since I have to work and have nobody to watch our kids since they’re off.
