10% Of New York City's Students Are Homeless.

Despite the City having an economic Renaissance and a $6 billion dollar budget surplus,  the student homeless population continues to increase.  Of the 1.1 million students, approximately 140,000 are homeless or 10% of the student population.  In fact, there has been a 28% increase in student homelessness since Bill de Blasio became Mayor of New York City.  In the last 20 year period, between 1994 and 2014, there has been a 115% increase in sthe student homeless population and that has only increased in the last few years as it rose 22% in the 2015-2016 school year and another 6% in the 2015-2017 school year.

Obviously, the reason for the increased homeless population is due to an affordable housing shortage and the City still a attractive location for recent immigrants, many of then with limited English language skills,  In fact, Mayor Bill de Blasio has told Puerto Ricans that while their students are welcome to the New York City schools, their family better be able to have friends or relatives take in since the City has no housing to provide them with and the shelters are overcrowded as is..

Educationally, its a well known fact that homeless students experience higher dropout rates, lower graduation rates, and chronic absenteeism.  The ICPH study shows how homelessness affects student academic achievement.  Until the student homeless problem is solved, expecting real academic improvement is simply "smoke and mirrors".

In Queens schools the amount of homeless students vary by school district.  They are as follows:

District 24.............................4,186
District 25.............................2,020
District 26...............................945
District 27............................3,164
District 28............................2,638
District 29............................2,782
District 30............................3,058

Total..................................18,173

Really terrible to see these numbers. A real problem. By the way Chaz, speaking of percentages do you know the percentage of teachers who smoke marajuana? Do you find it strange that teachers are not drug tested like other civil service jobs? I would estimate that 50% of teachers are doing drugs including marajuana. Imagine if a drug test was enforced? 35,000 teachers would be out of a job!

UFT is making a deal to lower pensions for a Janus exemption.

I'm glad you mentioned one of the big causes - immigration of people from other countries who happen to be poor (and often illiterate).

This then begs the age old question: why does the USA need more immigrants? So many are homeless, under-educated, unable to survive in what is still a first world economy and generally prone to becoming welfare cases that you and I have to pay for.

Whatever happened to helping African Americans? It seems most liberals have given up and moved on to those cute little brown immigrants who bring yummy foods. One of the big reasons Black Lives Matter came on the scene so suddenly is because white liberals stopped paying attention to blacks and they are mad as anything.

I would rather spend welfare money and educational dollars helping black people rise up, than importing people who come from nation states with governments who just want to come and get on welfare here and get all the other freebies.

the post is horrible news for these families and it is horrible for teacher since our jobs are tied to these problems.
Bo dietl wants to drug test teachers.... Students are vaping wax in the schools no one cares... but drug testing teachers that is the priority... teachers are public enemy #1

wish the uft would make negotiate a 20 yos 50 yoa buy out @ 40% FAS with immediate health benefits for tier 4 members that is all i want - no raise - just want out!!!
it would save the city a ton of money. mikey do something good for once - get us a buy out!!!

What are you talking about? UFT has nothing to do with pensions. Janus would not impact pensions at all. Pensions are a NYS thing and have noting to do with NYC or the DOE.

In addition, Janus will be decided on a constitutional level. Doubtful NY could grant
exemptions to federal case

@2:13PM - Please do not generalize and state "brown" immigrants. There are immigrants from all over the world here and from every continent. Check your facts and find out what group in the USA receives the most public assistance. You will be shocked.

Anon 2:13: I don't usually respond to these racist tirades that show up on this blog comments, but you can't possibly be serious! African Americans need white people and are organizing because we are not getting your attention anymore! You cannot be that f'ing seriously mentally deranged! I am Black, multi-degreed educator in the DOE. I don't recall ever getting where I am through the benefit of white people. I remember being hindered and held back by many, but few ever helped me do anything. You cannot be so delusional to think you are the Great White Hope for us. Get over yourself, you in particular and others like you are the reason there will always be strife between the "races." God help us that people like you are teaching ANY children! Get help, you need it!

To 8:39

60% of all immigrants are on some form of public assistance.
90% of all LAtino immigrants are on public welfare of one kind or another.

My point is, why should we take ANY immigrants who are taking money away from helping Black people rise above?

Until we improve lives for our own American citizens, born and raised here, we should not turn into the flop house of the world.
Come to the South Bronx or central and southern Queens some time to see what I mean.

What's your source for the statistics? Mention a breakdown of all different types of groups receiving public assistance. (Don't forget hassidic Jews in Brklyn.) What do you mean by some form of public assistance. Does your statistic include NYC, NYS and/or USA? Very vague.

@8:39. Why do you only make reference to African Americans needing help. There are other American ethnic/racial groups that need 'help'.

We all need help,,,,we being all of us who work for the DOE so set aside racial and look at us as a whole we will need all of us.

That's right @8:34AM.
