Not All UFT Educators Who Worked In The 2009-10 School Years Get The Lump Sum Payments.

This Sunday UFT members will get their second 12.5% lump sum payment in their regular paycheck if they were on active service in the 2009 and 2010 school years.  The lump sum payments are money owed to us when then Mayor Michael Bloomberg decided not to abide by the City's collective bargaining pattern he negotiated with 75% of the other municipal unions that consisted of two 4% raises.  UFT President, Michael Mulgrew, negotiated a sweetheart deal for the City that resulted in the UFT members receiving a measly 1.4% raise annually for the seven year contract and delaying payment of the two 4% raises for years, with the last lump sum being paid out in 2020!

However, not all UFT members will be getting their lump sum payments.  Who will not be getting their lump sum payments?  Let me count the groups who will be screwed.

Tier VI Educators:
Those Tier VI educators didn't join the UFT until after March 31st 2012 and along with those Tier IV educators who were hired after the 2009 and 2010 school years will not receive any lump sum payments.

Educators on Unpaid Leave:
Educators who were on maturity leave or other unpaid leaves in October of 2015 will not get their 2017 lump sum payments. Instead they will receive their 2015 lump sum payment instead and it will not include the two year interest accumulated for the delayed payment.  Educators who were under unpaid suspension and those that took time off for personal reasons fall into this category.

Educators Who Resigned or were Terminated:
Any UFT educator who resigned or were terminated will not get any lump sum payments, despite working those two years.  However, if the educator retires. (must be 55 years of age or older and vested), the lump sum patments will be paid out with other retires.  Obviously, if an educator is currently on unpaid leave, they will  not recieve this year's lump sum payment this year.

Educators who transferred to other City Jobs:
If an educator transfers to a non-UFT title, except if they joined the CSA, they will in effect has resigned and receive no lump sum payments.

Educators who have Died before October 1, 2017:
If the educator died, their family or beneficiaries does not get the lump sum payments.

It would be interesting to find out how many UFT educators will not receive their well deserved lump sum payments because our union leadership decided to sacrifice them to make Mayor Bill de Blasio look good.

How can newer members not be getting a payment? They were paid at an incorrect rate, even if they were hired this year. Doesn't anyone hired before the raises are fully phased in get something? I'm confused.

its typical of the worst school system in the country if not the planet! of course the ones that yell the loudest about how well everything is already have there futures secure. the fact that farina was dug up out of retirement only get her pension and a salary shows how closed the ranks are. the nyshitty school system was a curse that I put up with for 18 years and to think I got into teaching to make a difference.

Wanna have some fun? Call the UFT and try to get an explanation of why they jacked up the dues. After keeping me on hold for 40 minutes they came back with "because of the retro". I asked why and they said because it was a sliding scale based on salary. I pointed out that we all pay the same dues regardless of salary and was put on hold for another 20 minutes only to be told again "they are telling us it's because of the retro". When I pushed for the formula they used to determine how much extra dues they are collecting " because of retro" I was promptly put on hold and sent to the voicemail of the payroll manager. You will have better luck getting VAM explained......but hey why not bombard the UFT with call until they explain why they "taxed" us on the retro.

Tier VI educators in my school did get a lump sum (albeit only a few dollars). The newbie I am mentoring got a little under 11 dollars.

The big scandal that nobody is talking about is how screwed up the pay stubs are and how nobody knows how much they are supposed to pay in union dues....

My question is why my union dues for this check are over 115 dollars.

Contact DOE payroll to complain about the UFT deduction. Flood DOE payroll with calls.
The DOE is part of the scam, working the racket for their friends in the UFT leadership.

If a retiree dies before all the retro payments are distributed by 2020, do their heirs get the retro payment that come due?

Sounds like the UFT took the dues they would normally take from your regular paycheck and then an additional amount from the retro.

I have to say I agree with 10:30.
I am making more than 1k a month in easy per session - not even teaching anything.
The retro will flow for three more years and get higher and higher.
I make a ridiculous amount of money for what is essentially babysitting these days 'i.e. facilitating!'

Don't get me wrong. I want to teach - real teaching in the old school, bring-the-students-to-a-higher-plane way, but Edu-reformers are destroying education as fast as they can (Common Core and Danielsons are the worst ideas ever, believed by so many 'yes' men.).

The injustice is everywhere. This is a sign of an eroding civilization.
However, we can fiddle while Rome burns. We can't stop the decline, so why not.

Anon 1030 here. OK, I popped out of mom's basement and got a little nutty. I panic when Chaz writes stuff that makes the UFT loooooooook basaaasd.

Correct your article because almost everyone is receiving some retro money. Anyone who is fully employed as of October 1 is getting some form of retro even if they were only employed a couple of days before.

Per session is just about $48 an hour now. When this new contract kicks in at the end of this school year, it won't even be close as to what the AP's are making in comparison. Throw the per session on top with anything else and it's about 25K more than a 10 month AP. They are seething.

    Chaz,

Can you write a post on what you’ve heard recently regarding atr rotations if they’re happening if you weren’t placed?

Uft is being vague(not shocking). Principals and supervisors saying nothing or claiming to know nothing too

  20. Tier VI members are getting a miniscule amount of money and for all practical purposes, it will get them a few starbucks coffes.

9:11, I thought the principals union was getting basically the same raises we are. Is that not true?

Went to the UFT ATR meeting on Tuesday.
Our rights is the same as last year.
Some teachers will get positions for the year
and be forced to be hired , The next year if they get an effective rating .
What bothers me is I was watching New York one and the three people on
The TV show said that ATR's are the worst teachers and the ones that Are placed
will be rated by the principal and be fired. It was the one that I want to show to say
that we are good teachers. It was one way just to bash the teachers .
    Help

Sorry I meant The ATR meeting was Wednesday.
Also they said there are 800 ATR's.
    I believe there is around 1200 to 1500 ATR's.

to 9/11 - Supervisors belong to a different union and they may or may not get the same increases as the UFT. There are about 4,000 members and that doesn't give them leverage in negotiating. There was a time when teachers on top salary earned more than an AP!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anonymous8:06 PM

There's about 2,000, but the DOE hired 8,500 new teachers without placing them first.

  27. Anonymous4:46 AM

Someone hired this fall is getting a miniscule amount. A tier 6 person hired in 2012 or 13 has been getting paid at a lower rate for a few years and will see some real money in the lump sum paymaents. You need to check your facts.

There’s always going to be ATRs.

Weingarten negotiated an awful deal in 05.

Now farina won’t send ATRs to renewal schools.

    Plus principals don’t want ATRs.

    It’s a mess.

After the election you won’t hear about ATRs for a while

  29. Anonymous8:48 AM

ATRS said it the first time and it still remains. Force placing ATRS in this type of negative school environment is not good. The principal will not want the ATR due to top salary and will rate the ATR status person unfavorably because to rate effective would signify having to keep that ATR indefinitely. This is a no brainer. The first day I went to the site the AP said the school does not need my title. There was fear in the voice. Administrators fear these placements. The incentives to hire have not been for all titles. For those that still have a ways to go before retiring are not good candidates to hire. To be force placed is bad news! The creation of the ATR pool was not a good strategy.
