Is Chancellor Richard Carranza A Racist?

Susan Edelman of the New York Post writes many insightful articles and is my favorite columnist.  However, I must disagree with her latest article which she seems to side with four White female DOE administrators who are planning to file a lawsuit that Chancellor Richard Carranza is a racist

One must look in the history of the DOE and see that many of the high level administrators were selected during the Bloomberg/Klein era.  These administrators were mostly Black and White, with very few Hispanics and Asians..   When Carmen Farina became Chancellor she failed to "clean house". and kept 80% of the Bloomberg era administrators in place.  This made sense since Carmen Farina was part of the "old gang" as a Deputy Chancellor under Chancellor Joel Klein before being pushed out by Joel Klein in favor of Eric Nadelstern.

For example she kept her close friend and incompetent Superintendent Amiee Horowitz, despite her repeated failures.  She also kept Dorita Gibson as a Deputy Chancellor, despite her sickness and couldn't perform her duties. Carmen Farina was part of the problem and not the solution to cleaning up the DOE.

If I was the Chancellor and decided to clean house, many of the people that I would ask to retire, resign, or be demoted would be the Black and White high level administrators and replace them with a more diverse talent pool.  That means that there would be less Black and White administrators and more Hispanic and Asian administrators.

Chancellor Carranza is not anti-white as the article seems to insinuate but simply a changing of the guard from the Bloomberg era administrators to what the present administration represents.

Um , i think we have to wonder why ALL, or most of the APs and principals in black schools are minority. That is almost a statistical impossibility unless they are doing it purposely. It isnt a good feeling when you are white and you are outnumbered 34 to 1 in the classroom and 54 to 3 on staff, and then treated like shit because you are white. White people in the doe are easy targets. It is actually an uncomfortable feeling.

Have you noticed Jews getting sucker punched and spit on by blacks in the streets? It is on the news every day.

Its quite obvious that Carranza leads the new wave of anti white rhetoric and renewed affirmative action. Since when is it ok for administrators to be nearly illiterate and have little to no knowledge and experience. Why are these people replacing the prior generation? You guessed it.

Teachers and society have watched the disintegration of schools for decades due to the lack of parenting. Its a shame that NYC has produced a majority of unemployable minority students.

The dumbing down phenomena must end. Cut the bullshit. Add vocational training as a priority. Stop requiring reagents and other non attainable goals to the mass of students who are destined for failure. Teach them to use their hands and minds. Experiential learning works. Dewey spelled it out a long time ago. Place these kids in programs early to get them ready for work. The diplomas being handed out are worthless to the intelligent world. It has nothing to do with color. If The students are not truly college bound then we as a system are preparing them for very, very little.

The race card is political.Diversity is here to stay. Allow the cream of the crop to rise. Its because they earned it. Doing well in school is cool.
Our elementary schools are good. Its way happens in middle schools through graduation that destroys the generations.

I can go on but I will let the forum provide more analysis. Teachers don't see the color of students. They see people who they must provide education and the value of it to survive and prosper.

Have a great day. Summer is almost here.

What is the problem? Are the Asian kids making it difficult for the teachers to conduct their lessons? Are the Asian kids making it hard to learn in the classroom for the other diverse students? Who is keeping the black and Hispanic kids from achieving in school? Is like to know.

I guess bloomberg and klein never hired any hispanic people? Is that it? So all these evil people from the bloomberg era are all white and black only? And now the hispanics are going to come to the rescue? Stay tuned my bat friends same bat channel same bat time.

I hope you are right. I agree with your assessment. The article, for political reasons, implies that the staff leaving are somehow victims. Based upon the last 15 years or so, we can laugh at that angle. The Chancellor can remove half the people in Tweed and other offices and it would probably either help, or we would not even notice.

My only concern is, that any kind of new top-down strategy to vilify groups of teachers, does not get pushed into schools through some kind of roll-out. They can play their Hunger Games at Tweed if they want, but schools should not become battlegrounds for it.

Chaz......I can't believe you suggested that you'd replace the retiring whites with minorities, purely based on skin/ethnicity. Absolutely a disgusting and racist thought.

Please explain......

Chaz said...

I did not say that. I simply said that that I would recruit on a race neutral basis which would probably increase Asian and Hispanic number of administrators.

There should be armed guards in the largely orthodox Jewish neighborhoods.I noticed that its the teenage black kids that are the attackers. What's their rationale? Is it a gang ritual? Who's the brains behind this? Black hatred of whites is very prominent. How do I know? I'm a doe teacher for 30 years.

Can someone validate what I heard is going on in June for the next Regents exams. Certain schools such as my school, Flushing High School, supposedly have a pilot program in which ENL students and ISS students, not gen ed, students can take exams over multiple days. I know FHS is doing this. Doesn't this promote cheating? What is to stop students from looking up passages on-line and getting answers from their friend? Are they going to make them sign a useless sworn statement not to talk about the tests? Are they going to be sequestered? It sounds like were are encouraging students to cheat more and more. Looks like the ends justify the means. Can someone shed light on this and does the Board of Regents know of this?

Chaz WTF? You of all people should have a pulse in what's going on in the schools as far as race is concerned. White teachers, white teachers with Republican viewpoints, white teachers with 20 plus years, and generally any white teacher is at the mercy of a system that believes that "white supremacy" exists. That being said, Carranza, DeBlassio, and the UFT have basically thrown white teachers in front of the bus.To me a math problem is a math problem, a science problem a science problem, etc. It should nake no difference the color of that educators skin. Additionally, I have worked under many fine hard working black and Latino supervisors who I personally had no problem with. However, there were many minority hires of candidates where one would have to scratch their head. The system in my opinion has gotten into the let's get someone from the neighborhood because the students can relate better to them. To me Carranza is racist, and his attempt to integrate schools like Bronx High School of Science will be the final nail in the coffin of the NYC DOE.

Illegal aliens have caused the outbreak of measles again in the US. In the year 2000 the US officially ended the measles disease with the invention of the vaccine which was being administered to the point of a generational wipe out of the measles in this country and officially declared by the US as eradicated in the year 2000.

However illegal aliens flooding this country with several type diseases have brought the problem back to this country. Turns out that the parents who refused to vaccinate their children and then send them to schools - where illegal aliens also go to school - caused the measles outbreak because the children who did not vaccinate got the disease from illegal aliens. I thought this was a fascinating factual problem that this country has had to face AGAIN.

Anonymous said...

This comment section is filled with lunatics. The measles outbreak is from illegal immigrants? It has nothing to do with the people who are choosing to not get vaccinated against the infection? Black teenagers are attacking orthodox jews? Yet I've never seen an instance of this even though I live and teach in these neighborhoods nor has the news reported such. And then the racial fear mongering here. These people make me ashamed to be a teacher.

How ironic. It sucks to be an administrator or supervisor at any level in this climate. Any time they exercise their authority to remove people, they are automatically accused of either being racists, harassing, sexually harassing, misogynists, discrimination or simply mean spirited.
Makes me nervous about becoming an assistant principal, just got my SBL. The media and blogs like this don't get all of the facts to even assess if the termination was warranted. They automatically judge the admin as the problem which is not always the case.

@8:46 this policy was adopted last December and is only for ELL students who take 2 or more regents exams in the same day. These students get double or more time for each exam, which makes it hard to do multiple exams on same day. Policy basically says, they take first exam, then in afternoon, Coordinator rips exam in half and gives student just part one of afternoon exam. They leave.. Come back in morning and Coordinator gives them the second half of the exam. There is alot of paperwork involved, prinicpal needs to go in ats and designate each ell they want to give this accommodation to, they have to fax a form to state ed to keep in file, etc. Not all ells will be qualified for this, only if they are deemed to need extended time and verified by principal .. Do a simple Google search for nys ells next day Testing. It will be first pdf with all facts on topic.. Hope this helps.

While I agree with you about measles, Black teenagers are indeed attacking Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn. It was on NY1 this week, a 400% increase over last year. I have seen it on the "G" train, heard about the attacks word of mouth, and felt it upside my head, in an attempt by 6 Black teenagers to play the "Knockout game" with me. I have dark hair and a beard, but hail from a different tribe. Denial is not making things better for anyone, and perhaps knowing the facts before branding people "lunatics" will help you to interpret reality more coherently. The Nazis also denied attacking Jews, so be careful which side of history you choose.

Hey, I worked with Chaz and he is a fair-minded teacher who treated all his students with respect, regardless of their skin color or religion.

Shame on you for for calling Chaz anti-black.

Dear 12:13

I went into teaching in public schools instead of private schools because I didn't care if the kids were white, black, brown or purple; I just wanted to get them excited by science. Over a quarter century of teaching, I made some observations based on the experiences I personally had. The first student to act out in any class was usually a black student. Not every time, but overwhelmingly most of the time. The students who were wandering the halls, often in groups, when they should have been in class were usually black students. Virtually every student who called me a filthy name was black. And every student who ever told me, "F___ you, I gonna kill you with a gun!" was black. Oh, there were variations in the rough schools I taught in, like, "F___ you, I gonna kill you with a knife!" or "F___ you, I gonna find you after school and jump your ass!" but the student saying stuff like that was always black. I never had a white kid say stuff like that, nor a Hispanic kid, nor a Chinese kid. They certainly had their own misbehaviors, but nothing like that.

The wonderful thing about this country is that everyone can get a free education. It's there, just waiting for you to take advantage of it. I would painstakingly lay out an educational buffet every single day, with visual material, written material, hands-on activities, all designed to appeal to different kinds of learners and make the material accessible. Most of the kids who pushed away from the table were black. Sorry, but that is what was so. Certainly there were some black kids who were sweeter than pie, a delight to work with, always the first to raise their hand to answer questions, unfailingly respectful. Unfortunately, other black kids in the class would ridicule these kids, tell them they were "acting white".

I made repeated offers to give extra help during certain periods. The students who showed up were Hispanic, Asian, white, some from other countries--generally missing in this assemblage were black students. They simply were not interested in putting in enough work to pass the class, even if help was available to help them do it.

Now I'm sure you are going to have a real hissy fit about my experiences because they don't fit your narrative, but they have been faithfully recounted here. I did not invent or embellish them. This is what happened. Certainly, you will shrilly cry, "Racist!" because that is the extent of your pathetic panoply. And I could care less.

You claim you never heard of black teenagers attacking Orthodox Jews, yet it was just in the news. So were stories describing the diseases being brought into the U.S. by illegal aliens. It seems you only see the "truth" that you want to see, facts be damned.

I know Chaz personally; he was always a fine and fair minded teacher. You, on the other hand, are an idiot who makes Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez look like a flaming genius. And yeah, you are RACIST.

Anonymous said...

@12:04 The calling card of all racists, "I'm just calling it like I see it" as they proceed to roll out anecdotal stories they generalize to fit an entire group. Also, in terms of the news, unless you are reading Breitbart and their ilk, there has not been a single story showing immigrants are bringing diseases. If there have, please show me. Also, it's strange that you are quick to point out the black students allegedly attacking Orthodox Jews yet never once point out the two shooters targeting jews who were both white.

But I guess you're just calling it how you see it.

Also, in terms of Chaz, I agree, nothing in his post history has seemed racist to me and his posts are generally pretty helpful which is why I continue to come back to this site. However, he sure does allow a lot of racist commenters on his board and as far as I recall, free speech does not apply to private ownership so don't try rolling out that tired line either.

Bravo! I can confirm the observations I have had these past 8 years as an ATR travelling throughout Queens High Schools. Anywhere in South Queens, Far Rock, Jamaica were scary due to the population. In schools such as Forest Hills, LIC, Queens Vocational, Francis Lewis, Grover Cleveland, the black population was small, yet they were the ones causing the majority of problems, walking the halls, etc. Look at Cardozo HS - the past two years have seen an influx of students coming in from Rosedale and other parts of South Queens via the buses, and that school is now filled with hallwalkers, kids smoking in stairwells, and verbal abuse to the staff. You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out why. But the responses are always the same - 1) Racism is to explain why it happens & 2) You're a racist for noticing reality.

The vast majority of incarcerated individuals in America are black. Yet, the black population makes up only a small percentage of the population. I don't want to hear about underprivileged etc. nonsense when in my experience black students were basically unmotivated caused most of the discipline problems and ran most schools in NYC DOE amok. They come to school with no homework, pen, and paper. They eat the free lunch and breakfast; yet they wear $300 Air Jordans. This problem was not caused by "white peoples", Jews, or anyone else but by Black people themselves that don't value education, hard work, and family structure.

Anyone who says they don't see race is a liar. It is the first thing people notice. Many black kids for a century had only white teachers. Look at these comments. Do you think some of them had some elements of racism? A century ago Jewish kids didn't have many Jewish teachers as the system was mostly dominated by Irish teachers. Do you think there was no anti-semitism in that group of teachers? I as a Jew expect there will be antisemitism from many non-Jews even friends.

Jonathan is right about this - if people want to rant about race they should not be anonymous and this blog helps encourage them. For the record, I was in the classroom for almost 30 years and never had any white kids. I only had the top class twice. My experience with black and Latino kids was 90% positive. (I just saw on FB one of them now 50 got yet another degree). I still have relationships with some of them and even was invited to some weddings where my wife and I were among the few whites and were treated royally.

In the late 80s and early 90s I followed one of my black students who was a great basketball player and was involved with his high school team and got to hang out with many black teen age boys on the team over 4 years. At times they came to my house to play video games on my computer (which so few people had in those years). I had some kids sleep over at times. My wife found them so polite and respectful. And some later on didn't live past 18. But That experience gave me lots of insights and was an very positive experience. Were they angels? No. But I learned so much and found some of my previous attitudes about young black boys were distorted. One of the best lessons on race in my life.

" I must disagree with her latest article which she seems to side with four White female DOE administrators who are planning to file a lawsuit that Chancellor Richard Carranza is a racist."

Lately YOU are one of my favorite writers; so we'll agree to disagree. I'm with Ms. Edelman and the four (white) teachers. Carranza is, most definitely, a racist!

One must look in the history of the DOE and see that many of the high level administrators were selected during the Bloomberg/Klein era. These administrators were mostly Black and White, with very few Hispanics and Asians.. "

Of what race are MOST teachers; and, therefore most administrators (most of whom) are STILL teachers who have sought and received (by whatever means) promotions? It stands to figure if more teachers are either Black or White, then most administrators will be too...Pomoting someone just because he/she is a minority is...biased and unfair.

When Carmen Farina became Chancellor she failed to "clean house". and kept 80% of the Bloomberg era administrators in place. This made sense since Carmen Farina was part of the "old gang" ..."

Very, very, very true.

"...as a Deputy Chancellor under Chancellor Joel Klein before being pushed out by Joel Klein in favor of Eric Nadelstern..."

This I did not know. Hmmm...I'll need to check this out. If true; Oh! the repercussions it's had!

"... she kept her close friend and incompetent Superintendent Amiee Horowitz, despite her repeated failures. She also kept Dorita Gibson as a Deputy Chancellor, despite her sickness and couldn't perform her duties. Carmen Farina was part of the problem and not the solution to cleaning up the DOE."

Not at all new or surprising. Cronyism has been around for ages and will be alive and kicking when you and I are long since in the ground..."

If I was the Chancellor and decided to clean house, many of the people that I would ask to retire, resign, or be demoted would be the Black and White high level administrators and replace them with a more diverse talent pool."

This is where you and I differ. I would ask to retire, resign and demote ALL of the inept, unqualified, punitive people who whose personal agendas - - instead of the good of NYC school children and schools - - drove them. I wouldn't give a "fat rat's" about their race, creed or hue. I would INSIST on the "best of the bunch". Not the most (or least) "melanized."

"That means that there would be less Black and White administrators and more Hispanic and Asian administrators."

Your statement seems to imply that more Latino (as a Latin woman, I must insist that you use the more enlightened terminology) and Asian administrators that White and/or Black. It may be true; but I doubt it as there are not as many Latino and/or Asian teachers and administrators as there are Black and White. Again, I would seek to draw from the most qualified regardless of race, creed or hue. If there are fewer qualified persons of any one of these...then I would not seek to make "fire out of clay."

"Chancellor Carranza is not anti-white as the article seems to insinuate...."

He is VERY Anti-White. He has said as much time and time and time and time again.

"...but simply a changing of the guard from the Bloomberg era administrators to what the present administration represents."

Oh he's a change alright. Heck, he's even "the guard" (unfortunately); but he is a deranged, rogue, vigilante "guard" with an imagined battle and cause.
Hiring or promoting someone JUST BECAUSE of his/her race is bias. It's also an insult to all; ESPECIALLY the hiree. It's saying that "no one else was good enough, so we will ACCEPT you because you "make good face."

Our children and colleagues deserve better.

Friend, we are in disagreement on this one. I'm still a big fan of your work though...

"Shame on you"?

That's how you want to characterize it?

Fucking pathetic and lame.
