Parking Permits - Its Not What It Seems.

If you read Michael Mulgrew's statement about parking permits, one might think that this is good news as it allows teachers to park on the street in DOE assigned parking spaces.  However, you must red carefully about the conditions.  The New York Post also discusses it as well.

First, before Michael Bloomberg in 2008 restricted teacher parking permits and reduced school assigned DOE parking spaces, UFT members could park in any DOE assigned spaces in the City.  However, now the teacher parking permit is only valid at the school the teacher is assigned to.  Not all schools.

Second, their are no increase in DOE assigned spaces, meaning its first come, first served.

Third, The parking status for ATRs remain unknown.

The bottom line is while giving UFT members parking permits is a first step in recovering our pre Bloomberg perks, its really a small step.

Ummm., sorry Chaz, the new parking permit situation will be almost exactly the same as it was prior to 2008. The only difference will be that permits assigned will only be good for schools assigned to where the individual teacher works. (Meaning you can't use the permit to park in front of another school near you assigned school) This fact was never really an issue at all. The stupid NY Post tries to make a point that teachers can use permits to park in crosswalks, etc, which is BS as that was never the case now or then. The thing that burns my ass is that Mulgrew is trying to say that the UFT "won" us the permits in arbitration which is a total lie. The fact of the matter is that the CSA (principals union) sued the DOE to get their parking permits back and won. However, DeBlasio decided to also give permits back to UFT members as well. DeBlasio did not have to give us our permits back since it was just the CSA that won the court case. As the NY Post mentioned, the fact that UFT got our permits back was simply a "gift" to try to get us to vote for him since he is running again for mayor. Mulgrew is trying to ride on the coattails of the CSA an spinning this as a "win" for the UFT when in fact, the UFT did nothing of the sort to get us our permits back. Don't believe the hype. The UFT never did a thing to even remotely try to get our parking permits back. The CSA fought like Hell to get theirs and they won in arbitration but DeBlasio threw us a bone by giving NYC teachers permits as well.

When I taught in a large Queens high school the AP made the parking permits available to the lunchroom staff and school aides. Unless a teacher arrived just at 7 am, the permits were useless.

One reason I retired was the daily parking battle. In the Queens neighborhood where the school was located, people would put trash cans in the street to prevent parking. One time some Asian guy yelled and screamed at me, telling me that he "owned" the space in front of his house. I decided not to park there ever because I didn't want my car damaged.

The best way for Billy D to get teachers support is to get rid of the ATM stigma and come up with some serious cash.

What about the ATRs? Getting permits from each school?

Does anyone think that Campbell Brown might want to give up her court cases as she keep losing and losing all over the country. One might think that lovely Campbell would say OK I give up and I must be wrong about this whole thing. But no, these education neophytes will never understand the real dynamics of education because they do not work in education.

Someone really needs to offer Campbell Brown the opportunity to teach a class in the south Bronx for one week. Ms. Brown would experience kids walking into the classroom, kids walking out of the classroom, kids listening to rap music on their phones, kids cursing, singing, screaming, fighting. And, if you tell them to put the phones away or to pay attention you will get screamed at because most of the students in NYC schools are needy, special education special needs children from poor families with usually one parent at home, if that.

Yes Ms. Brown come to a NYC school and experience real world teaching in the poorest district in the US and then talk to me about teaching, teachers and “tenure” and teaching youth in the NYC schools. Does anyone hear me laughing out loud right about now?? Oh yes and I am rolling over as well. LOLRO

To 11:20, you know the score. However, Brown and her social justice "reformy" ilk will do nothing more than blame nefarious whites, or 'systemic racism' or some other ethereal ghost for the students' lack of skills, motivation or good behavior. We cannot win.

I'm just wondering why Marcia Kramer from CBS News is so hell-bent on taking away a parking placard that many of us have not even received ? Well, not me or many of my ATR friends. I know that she hates D' Blasio but how did teachers get caught in the middle of her most recent D'Blaze attack? Today's news story assured the public that additional traffic enforcement agents were going to be deployed to catch teachers who abuse the parking placards. Well Marcia seemed to feel good about this and asked DB if he would "really and truly" ticket and tow the BAD TEACHERS.
REALLY MARCIA ?
