When Will Class Sizes Decrease?

One of the legacies of Michael Bloomberg are large class sizes.  The ex Mayor saw no problem in large class sizes as he refused to spend money on more teachers and if it was up to him, class sizes would double and reduce the teaching staff by 50%.

When Bill de Blasio became Mayor one of his campaign promises was to reduce class sizes.  However, he has failed to live up to his promise and class size are as high as under Mayor Bloomberg.  New York City has the highest class sizes in the State.

Now that Mayor De Blasio is in his second term and has had two Chancellors, don't look for any class size reductions for the Mayor's final two years in office.

The funniest part is all you idiots who think things are going to improve. I guess that's how you get through life. A teacher friend of mine just got rehired by the nyshitty school system after leaving not once but twice to take jobs in the suburbs. when those jobs asked him to leave he applied and got hired again. while all those ATR's sit in limbo nyshitty is hiring USED outside teachers!!!!! talk about a nut punch? your getting what you deserve.

Jesus Christ Chaz, you really wanna blame DeBlassio for this? He inherited the giant class size from the mayor before him. The last mayor inherited it before him. This debacle goes back to the 60's when class sizes were first brought into the union contract. Yes, they have not changed since then. However, don't blame clueless Bill for this. I personally blame the parents of NYC who do not make a stink about this. I am very well aware of the Class Size Matters crew and their lawsuit but they are a small group of parents. Until there is a groundswell of anger from parents about class size, it will NEVER change in NYC.

Still, Bill de Blasio dd not reduce class size while not placing the 1,000+ ATRs. Enough said.

Yes, the city is paying for the ATRs anyway, so why not put us into the schools and reduce class size. Probably too easy to realize. Also de Blasio should be blamed. The first initiative he should have done for renewal schools was to make classes smaller which has proven time and time again around the country that smaller class size leads to greater student achievement. Einstein's definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results each time, and all the doe does is the same thing over and over again. I was also reading about Maspeth High School's PTA meeting and how parents are saying that all those stories are untrue. How stupid are people?

diblasio started out like a firecracker replacing cruddy ole bloomberg and his stench of corruption and greed....yet i am so disapointed in diblasio for all the reasons spoke about here like huge class sizes, the atr pool and the overall climate of the nycdoe still seemingly under the thumb print of creepy ass bloomberg.

When will educators in the nycdoe realize that they have so many talented people in the atr pool including social workers, guidance counselors as well as teachers and that the real losers in the deal here are the students who seemingly are stuck with 22 year old hunter college grads who are really here just for a pay check and have no clue on how to teach a classroom or classroom management.

Consequently in most schools the classrooms are loud, disruptive with students walking in and out of the rooms while newbie teachers are perplexed....now,,, while they are cheap in salary, really the newbies are doing nothing to advance education in the nycdoe. But in the current culture of money and cheap labor rule over most other variables no matter what the variable is.

It's not just money. New Teachers are easy to control and manipulate. They can also hold tenure against them when it comes to passing students. Also it gives validation to their useless pds and all the consultants they bring in to show the growth of a new teacher. A teacher with 20 years in isn't going to show much growth because they are good already.

At least Carranza is getting rid of those terrible Bloomberg people. I mean de Blasio was supposed to do it, but at least it's happening now.

NYCDOE reportedly will be working with corporate reformers now in the creation of new high schools designed by the corporate elites....just in

The ATRs will be working these schools as corporate reform loves experience

In life you want the best doctors, lawyers, agents etc etc. In the education profession the idea is to give students to rookies w=because of salary and control. When their are teachers with 15 plus years who can make strides.

Diblasio will go down as one of the worst mayors, where is the 750 million for his wifes mental health initiative? All this reckless spending. Instead of condos and apartment buildings we need to build another 15-20 schools being built around the city. Overpopulation will be even more catastrophic in next 5-10 years.

to 10:42 PM - I know a retired UFT field rep who worked with other people looking for suitable sites for schools - something that the city, at the time, seemed incapable of doing. It is not as easy as it sounds - they would locate a building then check for liens, suitable plumbing for a school and even parking. Local transportation was another issue - how do the students get to the school? They didn't have much success. Just about every place they located had issues.

Is it true that tenure protections are so weak now that two years of ineffective rating gets you fired?
