Suspensions Drop In NYC Schools But They Are As Unsafe As Ever

The suspension rate has dropped lasr year, primarily due to the De Blasio administrator making it more difficult for principals to suspend misbehaving students and s reduction in arrests for drug possession and other low level criminal activity.

Last school year there were 32,801 suspensions, a 39% decrease from the previous five years.  However, it was not because students were better behaved but mostly because it became more difficult for principals to suspend students. In fact, principals are limited to a 20 day suspension!

While there are significantly less suspensions, the schools are still as unsafe as ever as otherwise suspended students are given a slap on the wrist and will continue to disrupt classes and cause chaos in the schools.

After 25 yrs I figured out the rubric.

Everyone in my class passed with an 80%! Even the LTAs. Kids I never met a single time passed! I'm a fuckin star.....

Since we live in an absurd PC world and people are as soft as a marhmallow maybe instead of suspending students they should be fed into community service projects, they can clean port a potty or pick up trash for a day to prepare for their future.

Even the suspensions for middle schools in Bronx all time low, used to be 15-20 kids in the suspension centers, now there are 2-3 kids. The example this disgusting mayor is setting is beyond me. As parents, do we not discipline our kids when they act out? Apparently not in this society

In other words, don't suspend the student. Investigate the teacher.

My high school is a zoo now. No one is ever suspended for anything.

The kids run the school and even disrespect the principal to his face.
No 'consequences.'

It doesn't help that many students in my school are recent arrival undocumented who do not even know what a school is.

Most are sife (slife now) with 2nd grade skill levels in their language. Yet we are being given 'cultural competency' training, which basically means 3 things:

1) Put up with their bad behavior, you stuffy white person from a cold culture.
2) Be patient with their lack of focus, they are sun people and so emote a lot
3) Pass them all or you are truly a racist, even though you still are one.

I challenge anyone to honestly tell me that this is not the real meaning behind this new 'training.' No one says Asian kids need teachers to 'understand' them.

Dude, I figured it out 24 years ago, the second they started dumping 50 new admits, ells, speds, safety transfers and anything else that could walk, crawl or be stuffed in like sardines being a teacher had nothing to do with learning, just crowd control and watching your 6

I recently had a student threaten to "Smoke yo' shit" if I marked him absent when he came in ten minutes before the end of the period.

Principal was thoughtful enough to remove him from my class, but refused to suspend him, or transfer me out.

The little angel spun the situation around and I was investigated for verbal abuse and corporal punishment..the AP was supportive, and it was crushed.

This could have been a 3020A! Thanks DeBlasio.

DeBLAZIO is pathetic but remember it is the new generation of pathetics and deplorables out there
..look we have the squad or AOC plus 3 threatening anyone who dares to speak up against this new mindset. good luck to new teachers and God help us if people dont wake up and vote these idiots out of office

Our UFT has contribited to the deterioration of our schools by turning a blind eye on targeting senior teachers, grade changing, and chaos in out schools.

Bloomberg stated he is sorry for the atr pool and at the time it seemed like the right thing to do but today he wants to reverse it and said all senior teachers are the best so now will you vote for me?

did bloomy just apoligize for the atr pool saying it was a mistake?

The harassment of NYC police officers in NYC is what has been happening to teachers for many years. When a school system teaches children that discipline and respect for authority are optional and the lack of discipline and respect bears no consequence, the chaos spreads.

I am not sure why the NYC mayors and the authority figures in the DOE pretend that they don't know this.

The doe is not pretending ignorance of the state of discipline in the schools, they have actually convinced themselves that racist, uncommitted teachers are the root of the problem. There are only three components of the system. Teachers, parents and children. The doe can only intimidate
And control one of them.

Our schools are being allowed to discriminate and iarget senior teachers because the UFT agreed to Fair Student Funding, and hiring on the cheap. The UFT is diectly responsible for the deterioration of our schools.

If there are fewer arrests, does that mean crime is going down?
