The DOE Provides Another Poor Example Of their Shoddy Work By Using Last Year's Rating Sheet For This Year's Rating.

Last night the Absent Teacher Reserve (ATR) received their last minute rating sheet and it turns out that the incompetent and ineffective DOE sent the wrong rating sheet!  That's right, the rating sheet sent to the ATRs was last year's rating sheet signed by this year's rating officer.  Such incompetence shows just how ineffective these non-educators are.  How difficult is it to use the proper rating sheet and who signed off on this travesty?

Now it seems that the proper rating sheet will be sent later today as the DOE scrambles to correct the problem that their own shoddy work and oversight created in the first place.

Too bad that these incompetents at the DOE are not subject to to the same accountability rules as educators otherwise they certainly would receive an "ineffective" or "unsatisfactory" rating for doing their job poorly. Now, to me, this is unprofessional behavior.

update:   As of this morning, the updated rating link has been down since the DOE sent it out late yesterday afternoon.   People calling HR connect are receiving wait times for up to an hour.  The union now informed me it will be corrected by Thursday. The DOE incompetence in doing their job just continues.

I spent 40 minutes on hold with HR connect. My rating sheet was blank and the CAR incorrect. The year was correct. HR said they're redoing everyone's for Thurs. 6/26.
Just a quick note- some ATRs I know have decided to retire. The principal of the school they are at now has to sign off (some have met with difficulty). Also there has been much evasiveness on the proper forms. Several have not been able to get the severance pay form (and no one will return their calls). It appears the city wants the retirees to misfile (or not file) the proper forms in order to save money.

On the money again, just a few hours after the event......

You da'man!

I wasn't emailed anything and I am an atr. But the disgusting and gross and incompetent field supervisor Justin Stark delivered my first u rating ever to me in person. I have been teaching twice as long as him and he gave mea a u. He has made this year so miserable for me - I can't wait to leave - I am a good teacher and a good person and I will be leaving sooner rather than later because I can't work for an organization that treats good people so badly and lets scum like Stark rule the world. Where is my email?

To 6:55,
File a complaint with EEO. They'll take it seriously. Get a lawyer - try the back of the newspaper The Chief (comes out on Wednesdays). Fight these motherf--fers.

I got an N rating -- does anyone know what that means? It was signed by a principal I've never heard of. My CAR was wrong and my license was I correct.

Can these people do anything right?

an "N" is when an educator is reassigned. It means not applicable or no rating.

Check tomorrow and see if it has been changed.

Thanks Chaz for writing about this nonsense. What a terrible double standard we work under. Educators have to cross their i's and dot their t's ALL the time (especially with tons of paperwork). If not we are in danger of getting ineffective or unsatisfactory. However the DOE can keep botching things up and no one is held accountable (even though their salaries are much higher. This hypocrisy needs to stop NOW!!

It's morning in America...and the server to the link where you can get your UPDATED ratings sheet is STILL down. I called a friend who is a regular, non-ATR teacher in the DOE to see whether they also got their ratings sheets via email. I wanted to see if THEIR link worked, while ours was screwed up. Regular teachers are getting the traditional paper ratings sheet, while we have to undergo yet more mental anguish with seeing ratings only online, then having them snatched away, then having an indeterminate delay at seeing our actual ratings due to DOE software incompetence. More grist for the lawsuit mill, certainly "emotional distress".

I was sent to a school on March 15th and was put on their galaxy for the duration of the semester. In May I received an excess letter.I was never observed by anyone in this school.I was observed early in November by my field supervisor.I have not received any rating sheet.

Interestingly, I was observed earler this year by a field supervisor. Fortunately, I received a satisfatory observation, yet when I went to my DOE email, I hadn't recieved any link or any email about my rating. I ask, When will I receive my rating ? Also, I hope that it is the correct rating sheet. In fact, I am currently on the phone with HR Connect. They said that I will have to wait 20 minutes before anyone can serve me. I interpret this as meaning tha all of the ATRs in the city are calling the DOE about this mess of a situation

I'm actually sitting in a classroom right now, watching 8 seniors doing BS work on something called Plato. They are graduating (or thought they were graduating). All 8 need some type if credit in whatever class. 1 needs a health, another needs an elective, etc. They are actually in front if me for a few hours typing some crap on Plato to receive a 65 in whatever the class is. The other classmates spent Feb - June in the specific class. These 8 are doing in a few hours. Great system. What a FARSE!!!! My principal loves this stuff. I should take a pic and send to Post.

These people are a disgrace.

Anon 11:24, amazing. We prob work at same high school unless everyone's doing it. Graduating senior needed a health credit. The dumb school never caught it on transcript. Today this kid actually did some crap on Plato. Friends hanging out turned into a party. Everyone answering the questions turned into a joke. Anyway, by 1 pm the student handed something in and was assured he'd be at graduation tomorrow as he was granted a 65. We all couldn't believe how this could happen in front of a senior staff. No one said boo including me. The kids are graduating with watered down credits.

We have credit recovery BS in NJ too.

The only people being held accountable in America are teachers.

And when our "graduates" are unable to perform their eventual jobs because they really never mastered the skills, graduating via faux credits as described here, what will happen to America? Where will our future scientists, engineers, physicians, attorneys, accountants, actuaries, and other highly-trained professionals come from? Only foreign-educated immigrants will be able to hold those jobs, because their countries didn't give a darn about their feelings, only their genuine mastery of their schoolwork. We will be ripe for a takeover by foreign entities without a shot being fired.

To Anonymous 11:24:
Please identify the school where these credit recovery crimes happened. The only reason corrupt principals and unprincipled teachers feel free to cheat is because people like you don't blow the whistle. So name your school.

To Nobile:
I totally understand what you are saying. However, I too am to blame for not being a whistle-blower. It is a damn shame that we are forced to keep our mouths shut because no matter what, the whistle blower LOSES!!! Becoming an ATR or penalized with a 10K fine as Portelos has endured. Our livelihoods, health insurance, pension....are way too important to take that chance. I ADMIT I am NOT as brave as you and Portelos. But it does not make me a bad person.

Hello 7:03,
Good to hear from you. Give me name of school in email and I will report it.
Confidentiality guaranteed. Or report anonymously yourself. You can send an unsigned postcard to OSI or SCI. You could even have a UFT rep make the call. What's important is to curb the principal. Don't let him/her get away with it.

Reggie Jackson said...

Chaz the UFT knows nothing about the wrong form being used and I didn't get another form today. Where are you getting your info from? Did you bade this on just looking at the old form when you received it?
Thx

Chaz- this is a little off topic but this week on the John Gambling broadcast he had Campbell Brown as a guest. She was bemoaning the fact that 91% of the teachers in NY state were rated as Satisfactory yet the graduation rate statewide was 61% and the state lawmakers were high fiving themselves over a three quarter percent rise over last year.
As a former statistics teacher I was yelling at my car radio. How can she compare the two?
She and Gambling both bemoaned the fact that Mayor DeBlasio seems to be an opponent of charter schools.
Brown then said that she had a few brave parents who were going to court over the state tenure laws. She said that they would have tough going because the big bad UFT controls the state government.
I admire her ardor - maybe she should spend her energies on something more important - like learning some facts.

I'm off to visit the wizards at the DOE.
This rating and computer system: way too problematic for my patience.
Let's hope that De Blasio will hire more staff at the telephone help desk. 40 minutes of a wait time is an indication that the kinder, gentler DOE needs to hire more people.

The UFT is useless, they are part of the discrimination against older teachers.
