The College Acceptance Rate Increase Hides The Fact That Most NYC High School Graduates Are Not College Ready.

The Bill De Blasio and Carmen Farina Administration were greeted with some good news that there was a bump upward that high school graduates were applying for college and career occupations in higher numbers.  According to the New York Daily News, 53% of New York City high school graduates applied to college, vocational schools, or civil service careers.  This is an increase of 2% over the year before and was hailed by Chancellor Carmen Farina.  However, if one looks deeper into the number there are some very disturbing issues that are buried in the so called good news.

First, applying and being accepted does not mean they actually finish and in far too many cases many drop or fail out before completing their education. In a study done by NYU in 2014 only 36% of all New York City high school graduates ( 25% for CUNY Community Colleges) that entered college received a 2 or 4 year degree

Second, the increase in remedial course work to 78.3% of all high school graduates who attained CUNY Community College is highly disheartening, meaning that many high school graduates are given worthless credits (credit recovery) to push them out and help devalue the high school diploma and the colleges know it..

Finally, the college recruiters are well aware that many New York City high schools give free or easy credits to pad a student's transcript. It's no secret that the college Math, English, and Writing tests to prospective students are given to identify students who were educationally deficient and most take these no credit remedial courses before doing college level course work.  In the last known study over 22% of New York City high school graduates needed triple remediation before taking college courses and few of these students persevered to complete a degree but by then its not a public school problem..

Until the remedial course work is no longer necessary, many colleges will question the educational value of the New York City high school diploma.

Great post Chaz!
Greeting from MORM (Master Of Relationships Movement). Great to say hello to your awesome readers and yourself of course. Ahhh, another beautiful relaxing day off. Happy Veterans Day to the true Heroes. Anyway, looking forward to finishing another simple week. I think tomorrow I will give extra credit to all my students and make believe it really means something. Yes my wonderful students you're all getting extra credit so you can all apply to college and all. Haaaaa!!! 95's for everyone on my scholarship. Chaz, we recruited several more members to MORM.
By the way I hope everyone reads the next few lines really clearly. A few of my colleagues recently let me know (while laughing of course) that while grading the students' MOSL exams (yes, the DOE or State or both have not figured out yet that this is totally ridiculous) they purposely rigged the tests. Obviously everyone who is intelligent is doing this. Great news by May or whenever the lovely kids take the exam again, guess what the tests will reveal? Yes, yes Chaz and readers of this blog, you got it!!! It will show an INREASE IN THE GRIWTH AREA!!!! Yes that's correct. We have mastered that part too!!!! Can't lose here guys. What a beautiful system. Friday I'm bringing in some apple pie for my administrators. They are going to love it. I enjoy feeding them time to time. This is point #24 within the MORM handbook on relationship bonding (tricking) with the savage administrators that are just learning how to write proper sentences in English.
Enjoy the day everyone and remember to always smile (point #2 within guidelines) while walking through your school.

Here's a farce for you...

The Queens High School for Teaching...

More then 90% of the students are graduating within 4 years with B+ averages, and no one is getting into an Ivy League college....what's up with that? Oh, did I mention the two-way mirrors designed to spy on the teachers?

When you jerk-off, do you think about yourself?

I just wrote a similar letter to the News. I teach at a local community college and what I see from so many students is pathetic. They can't do simple arithmetic and have trouble reading and writing and they have no study skills. Shame on Farina and DiBlasio for bragging about this farce.

Look no farther than Principal Namita Dwarka in Queens for credit recovery given to students like candy.

to the individual who started the MORM movement, you cannot imagine how important it is that you are articulating the basic survival strategy that many of us have had to adopt in this looney system. I used to be one of those who wanted "to hold students accountable," yet after realizing all that that did was get a target on my back, I understood I needed a new philosophy.

Many who are contemplating this road are held back by internal voices calling them to be Renaissance men and women and to stick to their standards, etc. The current climate in the era of Danielson's has made our admins our enemies. I just had a debrief after an observation and the craziness I was being castigated for was nuts. The imperious tone, the sneering, the haut knees and arrogance...

So I have had to adapt to survive. For my own children I spare no effort to bring them excellence in all things. In the schools, I am prevented from doing that under pain of being fired. I also am very liberal with the extra credit. I pass everyone. I smile and never lose my temper. I avoid conflicts and say "yes" to everything. guess what, everyone loves me and my target is smaller than others who have not seen the light.

our society is in rapid decline. Best not to let your spirit be taken away too.

A Jewish school administrator claims in a federal lawsuit that he was “tormented” by his principal who considered him “on the wrong side of God.”

David Possner, an assistant principal at MS 226 in South Ozone Park, Queens, claims in the Manhattan suit that colleagues texted him about a work assignment during Yom Kippur.

Because he used his phone to read the text and reply — which goes against Orthodox custom on High Holy Days — they called him a “bad Jew.”

When he alerted Principal Rushell White, a Christian, to the harassment, she allegedly replied, “Maybe you are a bad Jew,” according to court papers.

White also allegedly “callously targeted” Possner, who is demanding a transfer out of the school.

She once ordered him to pick up a half-eaten plum off the floor in view of school custodians, who then teased him and texted that he should “pick up fruit stuck in their butts,” according to court papers.

When a student set off third-floor fire extinguishers during the 2012-13 school year, White accused Possner, although he’d been supervising kids on the first floor, he charges.
White said she had “one Jew too many” in the school, Possner claims.

The Department of Education declined to comment.

MORM here
Another great day at work. Spoke to no one. Hung out in my classroom. Ate lunch by myself. Finished up my last classes and went home. Didn't see my principal or any administrators. Slid in, slid out. Tomorrow's Friday. Open book quiz. Everyone getting 90's & up. Perfect. Doing great. Everyone's happy, smiling all the way. Can't wait to be driving home with a big smile on my face.

Principals are lowering the percent of test scores— there are schools where test scores are worth 30% of a student’s grade. IN HS!!! Yep, pass everyone. Makes me ill.
