Long Island Students Continue To "Opt Out"

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) had hoped that by eliminating the time limit and to make the high-stakes tests shorter, more students would take the tests.  However, when it came to Long Island, a hotbed of the "opt out" movement, almost half of the students (45%) refused to take the State English Language Arts test.

On Long Island the demographics continues to show that the mainly White, middle class school districts have the highest "opt out" rates, while the majority poor and minority (Blacks and Latinos) school districts have the lowest "opt out" rates.  Interestingly, the high income and East Asian school districts in Nassau County also has relatively low "opt out" rates.  This is probably because East Asian parents support testing and send their children to after-school academic programs and Saturday school.

The table below shows the top school districts with the highest "opt out" rates.

School District............................"Opt Out"

Comsewoque................................85.8%
Rocky Point...................................79.4%

By contrast, here are the school districts with the lowest "opt out" rates.

there are plenty of extra help for middle and low income students to make them better students academically and thus "ace" the test. #1 would be just sit in the class and act like a civilized human pay attention and do your homework would do wonders! many middle and low income students dislike school and project this to the parent who then gives in to the constant crying about school and test. these same parent(s) probably hated school when they were there so its easy to give in to the child. also you have the parents who thinks "junior"
is such a great athlete that academics are not that important. lets call a rotten apple a rotten apple.

7:24 am: Did you enjoy school? Did your parents encourage and demand that you make the most of your schooling? Did you have caring teachers who helped you become the best student that you can be? I bet these adults also stressed the importance of your writing grammatically correct sentences. We all fall short--even I. No shade.

My neighbor's two kids sat for the exams. They have been drilled by the school in strategies for using a computer to take the exam. One thing they both disliked was that a student can't go back to something they were unsure of or skipped. This is where the drill ans practice comes in.

Cuomo telling parents that the tests don't count is what started the problem.

@waitingforsupport no I didn't enjoy school I tolerated it, I wasn't the best student by a long shot but I never gave up on it! I never let my poor writing skills define me. I was an above average athlete not good enough to get a scholarship but always picked 1st or 2nd. My dad was from italy my mom was the stay at home version. They were hard working and placed more value on manners and respect than school. I toughed out every "B" and "C" I got. after 7 yrs I earned a BBS in physical education. while grammar was necessary it wasn't stressed. I put 26 yrs in, 18 of them in the worst school system in the country (NYSHITTY). I retired and I find myself looking back on all the moron like you that could do nothing better with themselves except criticize. im sure your balls are only as big as the computer screen you hide behind!
